TransAm Bike Ride Day 59: Fought many short, steep rolling hills for over 5000’ of climb. Seemed tougher than Colorado! But a cool day, tailwind and very scenic. Crossed the Ohio River into Wheeling, West Virginia (my 11th state) on the 1849 suspension bridge.

TransAm Bike Ride Day 58: Laid low 2 days to avoid severe thunderstorms with hail and tornados. Enjoyed a cool day with a tailwind as I rode east to lunch at the 7-story basket building. Soon faced 2000’ worth of eastern Ohio’s hills in the last 30 of the 65 miles.

TransAm Bike Ride Day 57: Headed east touring the outskirts of Columbus, OH from depressed wasteland to the ultra high end New Albany. There was remarkably little interesting to see. I did like the Ohio State campus and a cool dam. 79 miles. #transamericatrail

With less than 450 miles to go on my Trans America ride, my wife Taffy came out to Indianapolis with the dog and van to support me. She proved invaluable when a construction detour involved 8 miles on I-70! Plus it’s great have company again (and to offload my gear to the van).

TransAm Bike Ride Day 56: Crossed the Ohio line on a cool morning enjoying nearly car-free country roads. 2nd bike path all the way to Cedarville. Endured 10 miles of bad trail in east Dayton but enjoyed lunch on the riverfront downtown. #Transamericatrail

TransAm Bike Ride Day 55: Exited Indianapolis on the shady Pennsy Trail. Some parts were so new I could smell the dress asphalt. US 40 was so quip that the lack of shoulders almost didn’t matter but construction zones added a dose of danger. 66 miles to the edge of Indiana.

TransAm Bike Ride Day 54: Speeded to Indianapolis on a more direct highway that cut 16 miles off the planned route. But there was speeding traffic and minimal shoulders; one bike lane sandwiched me between trucks! The city was impressive. 73 miles #transamericatrail

TransAm Bike Ride Day 52: Rode through the land of Lincoln, passing the Vandalia Statehouse where he served as a representative. Met Philip who is walking from New York to California. Enjoyed cooler temps and lower humidity but a headwind made it tough! 76 miles to Greenup, IL.

TransAm Bike Ride Day 51: Enjoyed the brick streets of old town St. Charles, finished the Katy Trail and crossed the Mississippi into Illinois, my 8th state. Much cooler and miles of shady bike trail. 77 miles brings me over 3000 to date! 650 to go. #transamericatrail

TransAm Bike Ride Day 50: Busy trail today, more cyclists than any time since Breckinridge. Passed Defiance, MO where Daniel Boone spent his last years (he was born in PA). Crossed many through-truss bridges made in PA. 64 miles. #Transamericatrail

TransAm Bike Ride Day 49: Out again early to beat the 101 degree heat. Crossed the Missouri River on a highway bridge requiring a 4 loop spiral to ride up to. Then more Katy Trail. 48 miles. #transamericatrail

TransAm Bike Ride Day 48: Recharged after a zero day, continued on the Katy Trail along the Missouri River to Jefferson City. The flat trail passed by steep stone bluffs and through vast farm fields. Done early to beat the 104 degree heat. 54 miles. #transamericatrail
