ACTION ALERT HB 1! HB 1: On Friday, the House will be considering House Bill 1, legislation that combines changes to the school finance and accountability systems w/ a universal Education Savings Account (ESA) that would use taxpayer dollars to pay for private and home schools.

The ESA will provide $10,400 per student to pay for private school or $1,000 per student to pay for home school, while the current per-student funding (Basic Allotment) for public school students is $6,160, with a proposed increase of only $540 per student in 2025.

ESAs (or vouchers) create a significant new financial commitment for the state, while public schools remain underfunded by more than $14 billion. Linking ESAs & school funding into one bill ensures additional funding for public schools is held hostage until ESAs are approved.
