We’re a new organisation with a mission to improve the UK's public data. We work to fill data gaps, and to strengthen official data collection and publication.
Hey data nerds, Defra has launched a 'Land Use Consultation' which says government wants to:
- make [geospatial] more data accessible for public benefit
- free up more Land Registry data
- explore options to increase transparency of land & property data.

Good to see HMRC proposing new stats on 'carried interest' - so we'll now reliably know how many people declare income this way, and the tax they pay. Clear public interest in this question. gov.uk/government/consultati…

Interesting finding from @owenboswarva: Leeds City Council publishes its address records as open data, with UPRNs.
It's not obvious if anything (other than £) stops other local authorities doing this.
So, government could potentially collate LA data to create a National Address Database...
ALT Why don't other councils publish their address data, as Leeds has done? There are a couple of possible reasons I can think of.
… Leeds City Council is one of a relatively small number of local authorities that have taken a proactive approach to realising the potential for open data more broadly. It may be that other local authorities could publish their address data in the same way, but simply haven't the internal motivation to do so.
It may also be that Leeds is more confident than other authorities that it can lawfully publish its address data under an open licence, because it has a better understanding of the lineage of the data in its LLPG and/or has managed that data in a way that distinguishes the Council's own intellectual property from IP that might be subject to third party claims. Councils with less expertise in those areas are prey to external advice, from Ordnance Survey and other organisations with a motive to discourage open publication of address data.
New post!
One simple trick to speed up net zero - add boiler data to the EPC register.
A simple, straightforward way to use public data to support net zero.

Happy to be heading to @RoyalStatSoc later to talk about the independent review of UK statistics!
The review found data gaps and unmet needs for statistics.
We've published our response here: centreforpublicdata.org/blog…
Look forward to seeing other UK stats system fans there.
“Labour’s package of measures includes widening the registration requirements for UK trusts in order to stop them being used for illicit activity, while pursuing other avenues to boost transparency around trust ownership of UK property. This would involve working with the overseas territories on a common transparency regime”

In January @cfpdata proposed that trusts should be treated like other legal structures for transparency purposes.
Pleased to see this has made it into @taxinparliament’s Economic Crime Manifesto.

And our briefing on trusts and property transparency here. centreforpublicdata.org/blog…
And as the consultation acknowledges - trusts now behave like companies in many ways, with many of the same advantages.
Our briefing makes a simple argument.
If you own property via a trust, your details should be available on the same terms as the rest of us.
Disappointing to see @JonathanCamrose suggest the current PAF costs are "reasonable". We'd be very happy to meet with him to explain the massive opportunity for innovation and growth if the PAF was free!
#Openaddresses was discussed in the Lords yesterday, during debate on the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill. I've picked out the relevant contributions in a blog post:

A welcome new consultation from @HMLandRegistry on changing its fees for data.
Its goal: "improve land transparency and ensure that our information can be the cornerstone of a data-driven and sustainable economy".
