“The fact that the top civil servant at the DHSC was advising one of the parties to the contract at the time it was arranged raises questions about impartiality, especially given that officials are said to be considering operating a break clause in the contract,”

"It is arguably highly advantageous for any private equity fund which generates most of its revenue from the NHS and taxpayer-funded social care to have connections at the very top of the DHSC" as.ft.com/r/11efcabc-cb2a-4d…

The permanent secretary of the Department of Health and her husband have links with a private equity company which owns a range of outsourced NHS services providers including care for kids, ADHD diagnosis, cataract surgery. Do the rules allow this? Were Ministers told?

Private equity owned companies now provide services to the NHS. These funds often load huge amounts of debt onto their companies to extract income for their investors. As a result NHS money is used to pay interest on debt rather than to treat patients. nhsprofitmap.org.uk

Our Director David Rowland writes for the LSE policy blog on why the NHS market regulations are allowing private equity companies to make huge sums from the NHS by providing cataract surgery and ADHD services, potentially at the expense of patients more in need. blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandp…

Five private companies were paid £536m by the NHS for outsourced eye care in 23/24. Of the £536m, £68m went to private equity debts and a whopping 32% - £169m - in profit. A clear case study in how NHS privatisation leaks money away from care. Report: theguardian.com/society/2025…

Why is the NHS outsourcing diagnostics to overseas owned private companies? The NHS trains and employs the staff doing the work and has the financial resources to buy all the equipment if it chose to. The market in diagnostics for private companies is now worth £10.7 billion.

Had the government capped the £169 Million in profits generated by just 5 eye care companies the 42 NHS ICBs would not be in deficit, but would be running a surplus. Its not correct to say the NHS is "maxed" out when Ministers and NHSE bosses knew of this waste of money.
