Most ppl won’t appreciate what has happened. There is a before and an after in the life of a seriously vaccine-injured person and the distance between them is not bridged by recovery that the system is not providing. The before is not always a life of exceptional health or remarkable achievement. It is just the life that was. The ordinary life with its ordinary capacities and its ordinary future, the work being built, the relationships being maintained, the physical self that could be relied upon to perform the basic functions that independent adult life requires. The person who could work the hours their job required, could be present for their children at the level their children needed, could make plans with the confidence that the body would be available to execute them. The after is a life organised around a condition that has no official name, no clinical pathway, no treatment protocol built on the honest engagement of institutional medicine with what the injured are presenting. The after is a life of management rather than living. Of the daily negotiation with a body that has become unpredictable in ways that the before self did not have to account for. Of the energy budget that must be managed carefully because the reserves that the before self could draw on are no longer available in the same form. The grief of this transition is real and it is largely unacknowledged. Not the grief of bereavement, which has social rituals and cultural frameworks and the acknowledged presence of the people who share it. The grief of a self that existed and then changed in ways that were not chosen and that the systems responsible for providing care have decided are not a legitimate basis for the institutional support that other transitions of this magnitude would produce. The before self received an injection it was told was safe. The after self is carrying the consequences of the gap between what it was told and what the data the institutions held could have told it if the institutions had chosen honesty over institutional protection. The distance between the before and the after was created by a decision made by people who have not looked at the people living inside its consequences. Most, if not all, of the government’s miserably failed response to COVID had no scientific justification.
