A good story is like a great soup - you have to build up the layers of flavor over time by letting it simmer and reduce, simmer and reduce, until only the best parts remain.

Bonus points if you can make sure your individual ingredients (read character, setting, etc.) have as much depth of flavor as possible on their own before adding them in.

Yesterday I did a school visit and one of the students asked about writing from your own life. I started advising that if you write from a specific event, you should get permission from the others involved first. But if you’re writing from your own emotional state… (1/2)
