These native plantings not only beautify our community, but they also play a vital role in stormwater management, soil health, and habitat restoration. In 2019, the Public Works Department took this commitment a step further by launching the Roadside Pollinator Program (RPP). This innovative initiative aims to transform traditional mowed turfgrass areas along our roadsidesโ€”including medians, roundabouts, and right-of-waysโ€”into vibrant native prairie habitat. Supports native pollinators like bees, butterflies, and moths by restoring lost habitat. ๐Ÿ’ง Improves stormwater absorption and reduces runoff by establishing deeper-rooted native plants. ๐Ÿ Increases biodiversity in urban landscapes, benefiting birds, insects, and other wildlife. ๐Ÿ’ธ Reduces long-term maintenance costs for mowing, irrigation, and chemical use. ๐ŸŒŽ Builds community awareness of the importance of ecological landscaping and environmental stewardship. Instead of manicured grass that requires frequent mowing and offers little ecological value, these areas now host colorful wildflowers and grasses native to Missouriโ€”turning forgotten green strips into functional habitat corridors.

Protect Your Watershed From Oil Pollution. 1. Do not dump petroleum oil or other petroleum products down our storm drains. Did you know that it would only take a quart of motor oil dumped down a storm drain to cause a two-acre oil slick?! 2. It is important to properly maintain vehicles, including cars, boats, and other equipment, to avoid oil leaks and spills. If you change your oil, recycle it by using the City's Household Hazardous Waste collection program. como.gov/utilities/columbiasโ€ฆ Contact the Solid Waste Utility @ 573-874-CITY (2489) for all of your questions about disposing of (HHW) Household Hazardous Waste, such as motor oil and other toxic chemicals. ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’ธ Want to Save Money on Gas? ๐ŸŒŽHere are some simple ways to cut fuel costs. Small changes in how you drive can make a big difference! โœ”๏ธ Drive smoothly โ€“ Avoid rapid acceleration and hard braking to improve fuel efficiency. โœ”๏ธ Keep tires properly inflated โ€“ Underinflated tires waste gas and wear out faster. โœ”๏ธ Reduce idling โ€“ If youโ€™re stopped for more than a minute, turn off the engine. โœ”๏ธ Lighten your load โ€“ Extra weight in your vehicle = more fuel used. โœ”๏ธ Combine trips โ€“ Plan errands efficiently to cut down on unnecessary driving. โœ”๏ธ Use cruise control on highways to maintain a steady speed. โœ”๏ธ Stay up to date on maintenance โ€“ A well-tuned engine runs more efficiently. Every gallon saved helps reduce emissions and keeps our community cleaner and healthier! #SustainableLiving #SaveGas #ClimateAction

You can find them in lakes and rivers across the Midwest and eastern United States, especially in clear, well-oxygenated water. Basically, if mudpuppies are around, your water is doing something right. They can live for over 20 years, quietly doing their thing on the bottom, snacking on insects and worms and even helping control invasive species like round goby. Just down there, minding their business, improving ecosystems, looking like a damp sock with limbs. If you ever hook one while fishing, go easy. Theyโ€™re a species of concern in some areas, and the move is simple: gently unhook and send them back to their underwater lair like the misunderstood legends they are. Photo by Matt McLean/USFWS

Stop using your toilet as a wastebasket! Flushing is the biggest water hog in the house. Older, conventional toilets can use 5 to 7 gallons per flush, low-flow models use as much 1.6 gallons, although the high-efficiency toilet is providing water savings; you're still WASTING WATER by flushing your bathroom trash away down the toilet. Since the average person flushes five times a day, those wasted extra gallons can really add up. Using a wastebasket instead of the toilet for tissues and other bits of trash will save gallons of water that are otherwise wasted. Don't use the toilet as a wastebasket! You and Columbia Water & Light, a Powerful Partnership! Columbia Water & Light encourages the efficient use of water because it can make a big difference for all of us. ๐ŸŒฑ Sustainability starts at home, and even small actions can make a big difference. This summer, Environmental Programs Coordinator Lelande Rehard and his family are focusing on reuse while tackling some major spring cleaning projects. As they build a new shed and clean out their garage, they're committing to repairing and restoring old tools, sports equipment, and even a collection of well-loved pool floaties. Items that can be brought back to "like new" condition will be donated to local reStores, helping ensure these organizations receive quality items they can sell to support their mission. By choosing to repair, reuse, and donate, the Rehard family is keeping valuable materials out of the waste stream while giving them a second life in the community. What sustainable goal are you working toward this summer?
