Every 40 seconds, someone dies from suicide; tens of millions more live with mental health conditions for which there is no good standard of care.   Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is one of these conditions.  A lesser-known subset of major depressive disorder, TRD is believed to affect more than 100 million people around the world*. People living with TRD have tried at least two different treatments within a depressive episode without success, with the chance of response decreasing with every subsequent treatment. Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is a condition in which individuals with major depressive disorder have not been helped by at least two different treatments within the same depressive episode. It’s estimated that more than 100 million people live with the condition globally.* As well as having a significant impact on people living with the condition, TRD also has a significant burden on the US healthcare system. A recent Compass analysis of real-world data shows that annual direct medical costs ($US 2023) for patients with TRD were $25,804 versus $17,053 for patients with major depressive disorder without TRD, reaffirming the need for continued innovation and access to care for this difficult-to-treat condition. * McIntyre RS, et al. Last week the Compass Pathways team attended the ASCP annual meeting in Miami, to speak with peers about emerging treatments and gaps in care for patients with mental illnesses such as depression. Congratulations to Nilay Hewitt, who presented on “Assessing Altered States of Consciousness", and to our teams who presented posters on the cost burden of treatment-resistant depression and remission in clinical trials.

Last week we officially opened Compass’s new office space in New York. It was a great opportunity for our US team and some of our UK team to come together, celebrate, collaborate, and get to know one another a little better. Here’s to more get togethers in the future!
