International Firefighters Day is observed each year on May 4 to honor firefighters for their service internationally and remember those firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice. DFPC encourages Coloradans to display a bright red or blue porch light at their homes during the month of May to honor firefighters across the state and the nation. You may also hear fire sirens during the annual “Sound Off,” which takes place at noon local time on the first Sunday of every May. Sirens will sound for 30 seconds, followed by a minute of silence in memory of, and respect for, all firefighters who have been lost in the line od duty or passed on before us. The Colorado Fallen Firefighter Memorial in Lakewood lists 172 names of firefighters who have died in the line of duty, both career and volunteer personnel. The memorial recognizes significant tragedies, including the 14 firefighters who died in the 1994 South Canyon Fire. Please join us in sharing your appreciation for the hard work and sacrifices our urban, rural, volunteer, and career firefighters have made to ensure our safety in Colorado. #dfpc #dfpcfire #FireYear2026 #cofire #coloradofire #firefighter #wildfire #wildlandfire #wildlandfirefighter #IFFD #iffdmay4 #FirefightersDay #HeroesInAction #InternationalFirefightersDay

#PoitreyCanyonFire update 7am 5/4/26 This will be the final update for the Poitrey Canyon Fire in Las Animas County. Fire management officials reported reaching 100% containment late yesterday. The DFPC Multi-Mission Aircraft (MMA) successfully guided firefighters to heat sources in close proximity to control lines, and crews made great progress patrolling and mopping up hot spots along the perimeter. DFPC will be working with Las Animas County and the local fire protection district to determine the timing of the transfer of command today. Most resources are being released; however, an engine will remain for at least another day to patrol and monitor before the arrival of a spring storm expected to bring widespread precipitation.

May is Wildfire Awareness Month in Colorado! Thank you to Governor Jared Polis for your continued support in encouraging people who live in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) to take action and mitigate wildfire risk to their lives, homes, and communities. Learning to live with wildfire must be a priority in Colorado, something we practice until living with nature becomes second nature. To protect our everything, we must make the necessary lifestyle changes now: take action, do the work, harden our homes, and adapt to wildfire. #PoitreyCanyonFire update 8am 5/2/26 There is no reported change in acreage or percent containment today, but more rain fell over the fire yesterday, limiting fire activity. Fire behavior was minimal and mostly smoldering, with pockets of creeping in drier fuels. Roads in the area were largely impassable, especially early in the day, hampering firefighters’ access to the fireline. Today, the DFPC Multi-Mission Aircraft (MMA) will be requested to gather intelligence on areas with residual heat, and crews will focus on building depth along containment lines. The number of personnel working on the fire has been reduced to 40, and resources continue to be released. Fire managers are developing a plan to return the fire to local control.
