We were pleased to see the federal government endorse our recommendation to remove the filing requirement for Canadian corporations, partnerships and trusts from the Underused Housing Tax (UHT). Unfortunately, the exemption does not extend to 2022 creating “uncertainty” for those Canadians who would be required to file for that year and the tax professionals advising them. We are heartened that the federal government has endorsed CPA Canada’s recommendation to remove the filing requirement for Canadian corporations, partnerships and trusts from the Underused Housing Tax. #FES2023
CPA Canada believes the Canadian government was prudent in refraining from new spending measures in the #FES2023, given the current inflationary context, but would also have liked to see steps toward implementation on a host of previously introduced measures.
We are concerned that strong language in the #FES2023 to “crack down on short-term rentals,” with a plan to deny the deduction of actual allowable expenses incurred for short-term rental properties, could create inequities in the tax system with no clear sense that it will meaningfully improve Canada’s housing supply.
The Government of Canada has an excellent book “The Little Black Book of Scams 2nd edition” that covers many types of fraud situations and is an excellent place to start. Also, request a fraud session for your organization/community and have a CPA present a financial literacy session on Fraud Protection: ow.ly/e5ZB50Q8tGZ#FraudChat
