Father of identical twins, husband, attorney, former trial and appellate judge, Kalamazoo College Athletic Hall of Fame, Illini JD and MBA, adopted MSU Spartan.
My trip around small venues in the Midwest to take my twins to see their favorite up-and-coming bands continues tonight. In a surreal scene, Geordie Greep takes the stage with the #NBAFinals game in the background. As they would say, what is happening?!

Here’s an exciting professional opportunity if you’re an experienced paralegal. My firm is hiring someone to work with me in our Kalamazoo office! I’ve heard that I’m fun, funny, and a good team player, so people are saying you should join me! 😉

The greatest benefit of my new job with Ven Johnson Law is that I get to see my two brothers from another mother, Ven Johnson and Mark Riley, and two of my daughters as part of my work life. Nothing could make me happier! 😊

More than 100 former federal prosecutors who served in Chicago and Rockford delivered an extraordinary rebuke of U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros on Monday, concluding there’s been a “failure of leadership." chicago.suntimes.com/immigra…
Bumped into yet another old friend while walking around my neighborhood. So many of us have settled here, but it’s amazing how everyone else seems to be aging while I’m not. Right? RIGHT?! 😬
The annual judges vs. women lawyers softball game is one of my favorite events of the year. We get to play in a minor-league ballpark and my twins run the bases with me after the game. Here’s the fearsome judges squad and one of my twins with me. 🥎😊
Thanks @wmwhitecaps !!!
So I go to a minor league game tonight and I’ll wind up on the news at 11:00. Can’t believe they had questions about res judicata and issue-preservation. 😳

Made my first motion argument in 18 years today. It felt surprisingly familiar and thoroughly enjoyable. I’m so grateful for all the work that my colleagues at Ven Johnson Law put into developing the record that I used for my argument. Practicing law well is truly a team effort!
Just received a beautiful farewell gift from the Michigan Court of Appeals. It fits perfectly in my new office, and I’ll always treasure it. This has been a year filled with pleasant surprises! 😊 #blessed
This will be an interesting week. For the first time in more than 18 years, I’ll return to the courtroom as an advocate, rather than a judge. We’ll see how much rust I have to knock off to return to my form before I was appointed to the bench. Wish me luck!
How much am I all in on the #Illini hoops squad this upcoming season? I just booked my hotel for the 2027 Big Ten tournament, and now I’m looking at hotels in Detroit for the 2027 Final Four. Oh yeah, I’m a believer!

I’ve left the bench to return to private practice, but I’m still serving as chair of the Michigan Sentencing Commission. It’s important work that means a great deal to me as a former prosecutor, public defender, and judge.
