ALT Earwax is a natural substance that helps clean the ear. However, it can build up and become dry and impacted due to overproduction, use of cotton buds, or reduced self-cleaning with age. This can cause hearing loss, pain, and dizziness, affecting 2.3 million people annually in the UK.
Symptomatic earwax should be removed as per healthcare guidelines. It is recommended to soften the wax first using softeners like olive oil. The Audiology service at BCUHB offers a wax removal service in North Wales, where patients can self-refer or be referred by a GP. Patients are advised to use olive oil drops or spray for 7 days before their appointment.
This study aims to compare the effectiveness of olive oil drops versus spray in wax removal, focusing on the success of microsuction, adverse events, and symptom improvement.
