A new Sydney ferry has been named in honour of Ruby Payne-Scott—an Australian pioneer in radio physics and astronomy, and outspoken advocate for women’s rights.
At the launch ceremony on Sydney Harbour at Barangaroo Wharf, Professor Nalini Joshi AO FAA (
@monsoon0)—a world-renowned mathematician and recipient of the Academy’s Ruby Payne-Scott Medal—reflected on Ruby’s groundbreaking contributions to radio astronomy and the discrimination she faced as Australia’s first female radio astronomer. The ferry’s naming stands as both a proud tribute to Ruby’s excellence and perseverance, and a catalyst for conversations about women and girls in STEM.
