The Sun-Times Guild and WBEZ’s SAG-AFTRA are UNION STRONG in our fights for a fair contract. We stand together in our respective fights for the pay, protections and assurances the union workers who bring you Chicago’s headlines — online, on the radio and in print — deserve.

Our members are on the picket line today demanding a fair contract now! We want a fair disciplinary process, layoff protections & guardrails on artificial intelligence. Support us by donating to our strike fund: gofundme.com/f/support-propu…

Our thoughts are with our @CTGuild siblings who are once again falling prey to the vultures at Alden Global Capital.
Today, @chicagotribune laid off five guild staff members in a roughly 10% cut to our newsroom. These layoffs underscore a sad but unsurprising failure of leadership by Alden Global Capital, our hedge fund owner, and local management.

Solidarity with our colleagues at the Tribune Guild!
The @chicagotribune is offering buyouts to our journalists. This move by Alden Global Capital, our rapacious ownership group, shows a total lack of vision and respect for the newsroom and the city we serve. We will do whatever we can to support our members. (1/4)

The Sun-Times Guild is aware of the third-party “summer guide” content in the Sunday, May 18 edition of the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper. This was a syndicated section produced externally without the knowledge of the members of our newsroom. 🧵👇

The fact that it was sixty-plus pages of this “content” is very concerning — primarily for our relationship with our audience but also for our union’s jurisdiction.

Our members go to great lengths to build trust with our sources and communities and are horrified by this slop syndication. We call on Chicago Public Media management to do everything it can to prevent repeating this disaster in the future.

Thank you to all of the treasured colleagues we are losing today. It won't be the same without all of you. You were the heart and soul of the Sun-Times. The Sun-Times is losing some amazing journalists. They wouldn't want us to stop. chicago.suntimes.com/columni…

Special thanks to my longtime Sun-Times colleague Rich Roeper for his excellent, prolific work — and most of all his loyalty to the Sun-Times and huge role in fortifying our brand, which has been a key source of our survival. Big loss for the paper, but kudos on a job well done.
After more than 37 years at the Chicago Sun-Times, I have decided to accept a buyout. My last day will be this Friday. It's been a great privilege--but I am moving forward. I have no intention of stopping or even slowing down. Cheers. docs.google.com/document/d/1…

A 45-year career in sportswriting in two pictures — from the Chiefs-Colts on Sept. 2, 1979 at Arrowhead Stadium to the Bears-Packers on Jan. 5, 2025 at Lambeau Field. I don't know whether to laugh or cry!

Since 1967, the Chicago Sun-Times has had two lead film critics: Roger Ebert and yours truly. There was no pressure in succeeding Roger, because there was zero chance I could match his knowledge, talent and passion. But I AM proud of the effort I put in to honor his legacy.
