Re: appropriate sentences for rapists.
In January of 1988 counterculture rag The Boston Phoenix published a fluffy feels puff piece in their LIFESTYLE section about a winsome convict, totally reformed of course, struggling to secure parole but repeatedly, unfairly denied.
It opened with a feel good blurb about how he resourcefully hand-raised an aggressive breed of fish in his cell in rain water. The offspring he produced were adorable and gentle- a shamelessly ham-handed metaphor for our erstwhile, hapless subject.
At the time, he was (re)married, had a good job outside the prison and was basically living with his wife offsite as part of Mike Dukakis' infamous prison furlough program - the one that torpedoed his POTUS aspirations (see: Willie Horton).
Next up we are treated to the sob story of his life : abusive father, a relentlessly teased fat kid. Socially awkward incel momma's boy. Failed marriage to a wife who allegedly cheated on him and living back home with mom at the time of his crime.
His crime? We're not told what his crime was until 3 pages into the article and then we're not told who the actual victim was. We're served up the offender's version of his crime (which he will admit- 50 years later - was a lie).
On 7 November 1966 Wendell Greenman kidnapped 10 year old Anna Marie Townsend from the street after she walked home from a store on an errand for her mother. He drove her to a remote location, strangled her, raped her vaginally and anally and stabbed her to death with a screwdriver.
He then drove home, relaxed in front of the TV. He got up the next morning and went to work, unphased, hydrated and in his lane.
He will be linked to her murder because, contrary to his mendacious confession, he was seen acting weirdly in the store Anna Marie was last seen alive in. His car tire tracks matched those found were the body was found.
He will claim upon being arrested that he believed a 10 year old little girl who was a stranger to him was his adult ex-wife who he had found walking down the street so he had offered her a ride home.
He will claim not to recall much at all and will claim he does not remember raping her.
This was 1966, so no DNA evidence, no direct physical evidence. Charged with first degree murder he pled to second degree and will be sentenced to Life with parole.
20 some years later he will be bitching about not being paroled despite basically being free on furlough. He will sue the parole board (and lose), complaining that they have no right to consider the specifics of his crime when considering whether to grant him parole.
It will not be until the 2000s that he admits he lied about believing a 10 year old was his adult ex-wife and about forgetting raping his victim. He admits targeting Anna Marie for sexual assault because she was a 10 years old little girl.
Wendell Greenman last came up for parole in 2024 and was denied. He's now in his 80s.
His next parole hearing is in 2027.
Wanna take bets on if Missy Maura's murderer loving parole board lets him out?
