Before we can start our July excavations in this field on the Wimpole Hall estate, we're going to have to persuade this chap to step aside! 🤔

April 8th was our AGM and the award of the Val Whittaker prize to Seb Walsh for his essay on a Dirham Fragment from Torksey. Last Sunday was the end of fieldwalking until autumn at Bottisham - little found but still c200 acres to go. Crops growing fast but rain needed.

@Camb_Arch_F_G are currently walking some very large fields near Bottisham, north of Cambridge. After the excitement of a spread of Roman finds seen over the past few outings, it's back to the mundane widespread scatter of heat modified flint! (Images: cafg.net)

The archaeology of archaeology! The results of fieldwalking by CAFG from 1979/80, recorded on cards and on hand traced and gridded maps. Grids would have been laid out using tapes in the field, with finds recorded per 100m square (hectare).

Recovering after volunteering on a hectic final day of the excavations in the gardens of @wimp led by @oatweet. Probably spent more time talking to visitors about the project than actually processing finds; but what fine surroundings to work in!

This year's excavations in the gardens of @WimpoleEstateNT led by @oatweet with CAFG and NT volunteers in support, getting down to some serious archaeology. Medieval pottery appearing, even some Roman and maybe the moat of the earlier manor house!
