FYI, if travelling Hobart to NZ, reconsider travelling #QANTAS you need bags within 48 hrs. I know of 6 people in the last month across 4 flights who have had bags containing essential clothing and PPE delayed on the way to do Sub-Antarctic guiding @Qantas

In the summer of 2022, scientist observers onboard tourist vessels recorded #humpbackwhales in Antarctica’s newly ice-free western Weddell Sea for the 1st time - a poleward shift that's an indicator of a warming climate, IMAS PhD student @afhender said🐋bit.ly/3ZN5eTj
ALT "Incredibly, we have perhaps witnessed another step-change in environmental conditions, seeing firsthand how marine animals are responding to a changing climate," Angus said.
ALT As part of his PhD, Angus is exploring ways to estimate how many and where baleen whales are in the Antarctica Peninsula region of the #southernocean.
ALT This winter, the usually ice-dominated western Weddell Sea again experienced remarkably low sea-ice conditions. And that may transform it into a hotspot for humpback whales in the summer of 2024.

The Earth right now is far warmer than the previously measured record for this time of year.
Even with a growing El Niño, the pace and size of the uptick that we've seen this year is pretty shocking.
