My latest for @WHQR: there's a big investment in the current budget bill that would create a firefighter training facility. But firefighters say the way it's structured will expose them to toxic forever chemicals. whqr.org/local/2023-06-26/fiā¦
I'm proud to see my colleagues at WHQR announce their union today. As News Director, I'm too far up the management chain to join (and possibly too far down to negotiate), but I salute and support their efforts. Like many other fine union shops, I believe we'll be better for it.
Today, we the staff of @whqr announce our intention to form a union with @SAGAFTRA. Here is why we're organizing. #wemakeWHQR
ALT We are proud to come together as a union.
As we approach our 40th year in service, WHQR is stronger than ever. As public media professionals, we
are committed not just to reporting the news and providing a cultural outlet, but to building and serving
the region that trusts us and values the work we do. Just as WHQR could not exist without the
community that supports it, neither can it continue without the staff that keeps it on the air. Our goal is
to strengthen this pillar of the community further, by creating a better, healthier and more transparent
workplace as the driving force behind one of the most trusted news institutions in the region.
As WHQR grows and develops, strengthening its news service to reach broader parts of the community,
we seek an active role in this shared future. We face questions of fair compensation, particularly as the
regionās strong economic growth leaves middle class workers like us struggling to find affordable housing.
Low wages drive turnover...
Unionizing newsrooms matters. I started at a paper in 2017 I was making $12.26 an hour.
I have a political science degree and made 24k pre tax annually. Yes I know I picked this career, but itās important. If you think news is getting worse ask who can afford that income.

I feel so lucky to work here as my first full-time position out of college.
My co workers are some of the most amazing people I know.
Big hearts and big minds, that deserve fair compensation for their selfless work.
Journalism is important, and so are the people who do it.

Hannah was actually the person who celebrated my first ever byline with me in Boston.
Sheās been motivating to watch and itās wonderful having her only a few hours away!
GO BU!
Much love to the @whqr team for opening their beautiful waterfront newsroom to this traveling political reporter.
It was a special day reconnecting with one of my close college friends after three years apart. Iāll always love reporting alongside you, @CamiReports! Go Terriers!
In Boston we learned to never mess with those raptor dinosaurs.. If you see them, cross the street and mind your own business. If they square up, be loud and run.
Labeling @NPR state-affiliated media is wholly inaccurate and untruthful. NPR gets LESS THAN 2% of its funding from grants through the federal government. NPRās newsroom is an absolutely free and independent newsroom; always has been. This label is a LIE and an insult.
The bill to ban TikTok is absolutely terrifying. It gives the government the ability to go after anyone they deem as a national security risk at which point they can access everything from their computer to video games to their ring light.
This is a Patriot Act for the internet.
WERE ALMOST THERE! I PULLED OUT THE GREMLIN VOICE AND ILL DO IT AGAIN IF I MUST!!!!
(This is me sincerely thanking everyone thatās ever supported āHQR. Whether or not you realize it, youāre supporting early career journalists like me and reassuring me that what I do is worthy.)
