A public health initiative to end disparities in the prevention, diagnosis, and care of cancer in people living with HIV (PLWH). We demand #CancerFreeHIV
Hi Twitter! We are #CancerFreeHIV, a new public health initiative with the goal of ending disparities in the prevention, diagnosis, and care of cancer in people living with HIV (PLWH). Follow us to learn more about this important issue. We demand #CancerFreeHIV
"Having certain kinds of cancer may cause feelings that people will judge you—just as I was afraid people would think that contracting HIV was my fault...choose to be kind to yourself...find people who will support you. This will give you more strength to face your fears"
A remarkable story from a woman living with #HIV and stage IV colon #cancer. Be kind to yourself and seek out the people who support you. You are not alone.
#CancerFreeHIV
Great to see a powerhouse cancer center like @MoffittNews supporting a local health organization @MetroInclusive that provides equitable care for all, including HIV prevention, testing, and treatment and healthcare for #PLWH#CancerFreeHIV
The wonderful people @MoffittNews are sponsoring a food drive to benefit METRO! 🥦🥕🍅🍆
Don't miss the opportunity to give back to our community and help those in need! 👯

So exciting to present this data! Bottom line: HIV-associated DLBCL outcomes continue to improve over time, and pts given time to complete chemotherapy have OS approaching HIV- pts. Listen to the talk to hear more! #ASH2022@huntsmancancer
@ErmannMD presenting his study on patients with HIV and DLBCL. In this study we reported the survival disparities that continue to persist in HIV associated DLBCL, in a population of over 146,000 DLBCL patients!
#PLWH are at higher risk of HPV and Hep B, viruses that can cause #cancer. Did you know the #HPV vaccine reduces the risk of developing cervical and anal cancer, and the #HBV vaccine reduces the risk of developing liver cancer?

"Among participants with advanced cancers entering ICI clinical trials...baseline CD4 counts do not differ by HIV status, low CD4 counts occur irrespective of HIV status, and CD4 counts <350 cells/µL do not appear to increase the risk of adverse events (AE) or impact survival"
ICI refers to immune checkpoint inhibitors, a type of immunotherapy now approved to treat many types of #cancer found in #PLWH. Several studies have shown that ICI and other immunotherapies can be safely tolerated in PLWH.
Many ICI trials exclude PLWH b/c of a misconception that all PLWH have low CD4 counts, and will thus have poor outcomes. However, many PLWH on ART have normal CD4 counts. This study shows that people w/o HIV can also have low CD4 counts, and counts <350 do not impact survival/AEs
The #ANCHOR study showed that treatment of high-grade pre-cancerous lesions in #PLWH reduced the risk of developing #analcancer. Ask your provider about anal #cancerscreening and report anal symptoms like blood, pain, itching, or lumps immediately

Did you know #HIV treatment (#ART) can also prevent cancer in PLWH? Uncontrolled HIV > low CD4 count > immunosuppression > cancer (Kaposi sarcoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, cervical cancer, etc)
ART > controlled HIV > improved CD4 counts > stronger immune system > less cancer.
Great figure by @sung_yun_pai @drkatelurain and Robert Yarchoan showing the relationship between immune defects caused by #HIV and how they can lead to #cancer. Let’s break it down! (1/5)
Pai SY, Lurain K, Yarchoan R. How immunodeficiency can lead to malignancy. Hematology Am Soc Hematol Educ Program. 2021 Dec 10;2021(1):287-295. doi: 10.1182/hematology.2021000261. PMID: 34889385; PMCID: PMC8791117.
function also becomes abnormal which can lead to B cell cancers. Finally, the HIV virus and other viruses that PLWH are more susceptible to activate the immune system over time and cause chronic inflammation. This can lead to further immune dysfunction resulting in (4/5)
infection and cancer. That's a lot of information to take in, but the relationship between HIV and cancer is very complex and there is still much to learn (5/5).
