While storm assessment and cleanup is underway, park buildings and several areas remain closed for safety. Most of the Outer Cape is without power, including park buildings. National seashore staff are still cleaning up storm damage throughout the park.

Impacts from Hurricane Erin Beaches are experiencing high surf, rip currents, and hazardous swimming conditions. For visitor safety, lifeguards have closed the water to all recreational activities at the park’s beaches. Access to the ORV corridor will be closed at 6 pm today.

Erosion is a natural process. To better understand erosion in areas of concern, like infrastructure or culturally significant locations, Cape Cod National Seashore scientists have been using terrestrial LiDAR technology to collect 3D data of the bluffs and dunes. NPS/Rasmussen

LiDAR stands for "light detection and ranging” and works by bouncing laser beams off the surrounding environment and measuring how long it takes the beam to return. The result is a detailed 3D image that park scientists can use to examine how our coasts are changing. NPS/Hohman

Last week, a man-made object washed up on Marconi Beach, and staff worked together to get it off the beach before it was swept away. Park historian Bill Burke examined the object and determined that it was the fuselage of a Remote Control Aerial Target (RCAT).  NPS/Hohman

RCATs were drone planes used for target practice for anti-aircraft training off Marconi at Camp Wellfleet during the 1940s and 50s. NPS Archives.

Aircraft equipped with an RCAT would take off from a now defunct runway located in the woods of Wellfleet. The RCAT would then be rocket-launched off the aircraft at 0 to 60 mph within the first 30 feet, and then controlled remotely from the bluff. NPS Archives.
