Shackleton and his huge hat getting side-eyed by Scott who looks so bad I didn't recognise him and obviously the other guy is Wilson, classic Wilson pose. [RGS]
I forgot that I already have two books about Scott but I just don't have time to read them as long as I'm researching/writing my own book (books?). The sticker placement on the Huntford cover, waaaah. 😂 Can't wait to learn about my birthday twin Con!
Today I had the joj of eating my first Terry's Chocolate Orange after letting it roll down Sir John Barrow's Monument in Ulverston. That's apparently a Cumbrian thing, letting food roll down a hill. Inspired by this infamous Fitzjames bot tweet.
Born on 6 June, myself and Robert Falcon Scott. Happy birthday to us! Coincidentally just watched him die in The Last Place On Earth. Oh well, at least I'm still alive. 😅
Spending a lot of hours on trains this week so brought this book with me, which I've never read in full. Thread of things that made me wonder: where did Fleming get this info? 🛢
Fleming says journals & memoirs are primary sources, but in published form these are of course a literary creations. Fleming didn't read any original journals. He also mostly draws on secondary sources (books). Some chapters based on more primary sources, though.
The Morning Herald of 24 October 1825 reports on the return of Edward Parry's Hecla & Fury expedition and on the departure of Fitzjames' first ship, HMS Pyramus.
April 6 1874: John Barrow records his weight (as he often did. I know he was a little guy. Once said he's 5'7 in boots, I don't believe it!) & shares an article about an idea to have a picture gallery of bachelors where young ladies can choose their future husbands. Tinder 1874.
One of the most useful things Clements Markham ever did was create The Arctic Navy list, a handy overview of every Arctic officer from 1773-1873. A great reference work, I use it all the time. It's also online, but I prefer a physical copy. One day I'll have a 1st edition!
