Angry blowhard @houstonrbyrd gets a few things wrong:
1) Generalizing from an irregular conjugation of the verb 'be'. It's irregular because it doesn't apply to other verbs.
2) Equating the third person singular with the first person subjunctive mood. Not the same.

There are plenty instances in English where verb conjugation changes plurality despite the subject (e.g. “If it were me”) The whole idea is a non-issue. Cobbling together a grammatical discrepancy is the lamest devils advocate shit. Trans ppl don’t wanna field ur dumb questions

3) This particular use of 'they' was the American Dialect Society's word of the year (2015) and decade (2010s) as well as Mirriam-Webster's word of the year (2019). So it's legitimately novel, and worth talking about, and even worth celebrating.

I have an honest question about people use they/them. Is it singular or plural for verb conjugation? It’s referring to one person, so I would argue that it’s “They has the book” and not “They have the book”. What do you think?

The American Dialect Society made “they” the word of the year in 2015, and Mirriam-Webster did the same in 2019 for this usage. So I’m late AF to the game, but it illustrates that this is in fact a novel usage of “they”.
