Talking to a Division I college baseball coach this week, he said: “I don’t trust anybody’s radar gun but my own. That includes some of the biggest showcase programs.” Velocity is important, but so is credibility. Thought’s?

Overheard a parent talking about the importance of being on a “top team” so you could make it to the semifinals of a tournament so more coaches would watch you play. My thought? Be on a team whose coach can pick up the phone and get people to watch you play whether it’s on the premier field or on a field in the middle of no where. In my personal experience, most scouts are cleared out by semifinal and final day anyway!! Scouts show up for good players, full stop!

Kids don't get confident from being told they're great. They get confident from doing hard things and finding out they can.

Travel baseball has one major issue. We see parents already looking for the perfect “travel program.” Those don’t exist. What you need to be looking for is who has the best coach. The name doesn’t mean anything. The instruction means everything.

The Citadel rolled out there a 85 mph low arm slot fastball changeup guy against SEC Oklahoma and it’s a 5-3 game… you don’t have to throw 95 to get outs and compete at the D1 level. This isn’t a message just for players by the way.

Parenting isn’t a negotiation. Neither is coaching. Love them. Push them. Hold the standard. Kids don’t need easy adults. They need honest ones.

The tears in the eyes tell you everything you need to know. Ashley Ridge HS grad James Reeves, one of the best to ever toe the rubber for The Citadel. In HS, the only 2 coaches to recruit him- Russell Triplett and David Beckley. Now, the pitching coach- he stands beside them in the dance.

Compete every pitch. Not just when the score is close. Not just when the crowd is loud. Not just when you’re having your best day. The Prospect standard is simple: bring your best effort to the next pitch. #CarolinaProspects #ProspectsBaseball #BaseballMindset

Had an hour long phone call this past week with a MLB cross checker about one of our alumni who is now in college…in that hour, there may have been about 5 minutes of him asking me about his talent. The other 55 or so minutes… 1. How does he handle failure? 2. Tell me about his parents? 3. Tell me about his parents personality types? 4. Did his teammates like him or tolerate him? 5. Were his parents overly involved or did they let him deal with tough moments on his own? 6. Does he handle tough coaching well? 7. Were there ever times he made excuses for performance? 8. When he got hurt, did he still show up for games or not?

If you want to play varsity H.S. baseball as an underclassman, you better be facing real talent in the offseason. Quality arms. Good teams. Top competition. If you’re not challenging yourself against high-level baseball, you won’t be ready for most top varsity programs. Period…
