A lot of outrage and calls for greater oversight have been aimed at Newark schools' spending lately. Haven't *quite* seen the same energy at the state level aimed at my fav Hillsborough schools where a district employee plead guilty to embezzlement tho chalkbeat.org/newark/2026/04…

Newark's board of ed considered extending the superintendent's contract. That vote failed. Then in the dead of night a month later with no public notice, a board member changed her vote. The district says the whole thing is legit. We have questions. chalkbeat.org/newark/2025/10…

In the dead of night, Newark’s school board seemingly extended Superintendent León’s contract — without an official motion or prior public notice. We sought clarity & the district spox shouted “I’m not authorized to talk about what just happened" chalkbeat.org/newark/2025/10…

Here's where this circus stands: CPS said ICE agents came to Hamline. We all, I'm sure, reached out to ICE. ICE told some (not us personally) that they didn't go to Hamline. Secret Service tells ABC *THEY* were at Hamline. CEO Martinez told MSNBC that agents ID'd as ICE. 🫠

Our updated story on ICE agents — per CPS — today at Hamline Elementary School on Chicago's SW Side. The incident heightened fears among local families. "I empathize with those children,” Chavez said through sobs. chalkbeat.org/chicago/2025/0…

.@MichaelElsenRoo and I spoke with migrant parents who were too afraid to send their kids to school this week, in Trump's first days in office. School communities are doing what they can to reassure them, amid a mountain of uncertainty. thecity.nyc/2025/01/24/migra… via @THECITYNY

Re: Rumors circulating about ICE agents at a Philly school this morning, those rumors are NOT TRUE. Per school principal and the school district.

A few days after Homeland Security cleared way for immigration authorities to make arrests at schools, agents showed up at Hamline Elem in Chicago's Back of the Yards, a mostly Latino immigrant community that had recently distributed know your rights cards hamlinehawks.org/ourpages/au…

Replying to @reemadamin
My phone froze: CPS confirms ICE showed up the school; school staff turned them away, as they didn’t have a criminal judicial warrant.

Philly school district officials are haunted by the last school closure process in 2012-13. This time, they say, the community will be more involved. Some takeaways from the recent listening sessions: chalkbeat.org/philadelphia/2…
