Today is World Soil Day!
Even though we rarely see them, soils are an essential part of our environment.
Here are some #soil facts:
95% of the world’s food comes from soils.
Soils supply 15 of the 18 necessary chemical elements for plants to grow.
🧵 1/7
The Earth’s soils contain approximately 2,500 gigatons of carbon which is more than three times the amount of carbon in the atmosphere and four times the amount of carbon stored in all living plants and animals.
🧵6/7
Soils can naturally remove carbon dioxide from the air and store it underground as organic carbon – meaning that healthy soils can be part of the solution to climate change.

Thank you Carla Rosenfeld, Assistant Curator of Earth Sciences, for the soil facts!
