Our kitties' brother Julius -1 of the litter's 7-is still available for adoption: lifelineforpets.org/teen--yo… Lifeline for Pets will be at Pasadena Pet Fair this Sunday, Sept. 10. Julius was fostered w/ Elo and Sephy and so sweet - here he is when we met him. #adoptable#kittylove
Reproduction in 2 range-shifting species Mexacanthina lugubris (dark unicorn whelk) & Acanthinucella spirata (angular unicorn whelk) showed higher vital rates at leading edges which could allow persistence under climate change #RangeShiftNSFbit.ly/meps_SHIFT_av6
Today: construction of #RangeShiftNSF Acanthinucella cage experiment (cage in background); destruction of Mecacanthina cage experiment. Holes filled, zspar (in container) removed. Looks pretty pristine! @UCI_OCEANS
Beautiful morning to deploy #RangeShiftNSF predator cages at La Jolla. Welcome to new lab member Edward Nguyen & thanks to current & past 199 students Kyle Suen & Safa Sherzai. Experiment led by PhD student Ryan Beshai. @UCIEEB
Back in SoCal, we are starting 2nd round of #RangeShiftNSF predator caging experiments, this time for the local native whelk Acanthinucella spirata. Tides are v. early so waves are lapping at our ankles as we rush to finish. Dana Pt complete; next stop La Jolla @UCIEEB@UCIBioSci
Didn't plan for this when I added 1 night in Denver on the end of this summer's trip to Sitka (for fieldwork) & Fort Collins (for an invasions working group at the Powell Center). So amazing!!
Just had the best time in Denver!! And we got to be the first tour to play in that stadium 2 nights 😝 It’s really hitting me that we only have 3 cities left on the US Eras Tour. This has been my favorite adventure of all. I appreciate and cherish every second of it. See you 🔜 Seattle!!

.@BrackenLab & I are in #Sitka AK 3 wks working on 2 projects. 1st: a global study led by Mads Thomsen in NZ(we’ll provide 2 case studies)of facilitation cascades. Mine is Fucus growing on Semibalanus. Do these cascades increase diversity? So far max=23 spp on 1 barnacle! @UCIEEB
Congratulations to members of the @UCIBioSci Sorte Lab that graduated this past weekend: @UCIEEB PhD students @racine_rangel & Heidi @waiteh13 and @UciUrop students James, Jonah, Safa & Vanessa. It has been wonderful to work with you all! #SitkaNSF#RangeShiftNSF
The #RangeShiftNSF team is in NorCal this week conducting field surveys & setting up whelk predation experiments. Thanks to PhD students Ryan & Courtney for leading and to new team members, NorCal lead Bailey, UCI 199 student Kyle & CPH student Olivia!
Congratulations to Dr. Racine Rangel for successfully defending her Ph.D. & giving a great talk about super cool results showing mechanisms of multiple climate stressor impacts on coastal ecosystems. She heads to a postdoc in the Kroeker Lab at @ucsantacruz#SitkaNSF
At 2pm PST, @racine_rangel will present her PhD research at @UCIBioSci and via Zoom. This work was conducted in Sitka AK in collaboration with the #SitkaNSF project. 2 of 3 chapters are as yet unpublished (but stay tuned!), so come see for 1st view of these fascinating results!
This Weds, @racine_rangel will defend her dissertation on acidification and #ClimateChange impacts on coastal marine invertebrates - join us! May 31, 2-3pm, 4201 Nat Sci 2 @UCIrvine
ALT Flyer for Racine Rangel dissertation defense with Racine standing on the rocky intertidal surrounded by "hermit crab wrangler," "mussel whisperer," and "snail friend" star icons.
A long wait for post-fieldwork lunch at #CarolinesSeasideCafe provides the perfect opportunity to start planning summer fieldwork. @BrackenLab & I will be in Sitka AK collecting pilot data on heat wave impacts on culturally important coastal species w/ support from @UCIBioSci
SoCal whelk predation experiment site 2 is up in La Jolla in record time. Thanks all for being a great @UCIEEB#RangeShiftNSF team! In 2 wks we will have our 1st data on feeding rates & community impacts of this range shifting species
Congrats 🎉 to Dr. Heidi Waite for a great presentation of her Ph.D. dissertation research yesterday, showing that parental and carryover effects can influence population responses to climate stressors, but not always as we expect. @UCIEEB@UCIBioSci Next steps: @CaliforniaOST !
Happening now: whelk predation experiment going in at Dana Point! Thanks to @UciUrop students Kyle, Safa & Jonah for the help and @UCIEEB PhD students Ryan Beshai & Courtney Cameron for leading #RangeShiftNSF
Thanks to @BrackenLab for joining #RangeShiftNSF fieldwork in Baja - especially appreciated having a second driver for today’s 6 h return trip. Ryan, Courtney, Kyle, Dani & @LaraNavarrete2 are headed south to finish surveys in San Quintin.
