My work with @WHOI takes me to cool places, diving into a volcano 🌋 with #NereidUI #ROV of the coast of #Santorini Greece ranks with the most unique sites I’ve explored. An exceptionally successful expedition complete! #WomenInSTEM #WHOI
Meet Casey Machado: the ROV operations lead and pilot for NUI! #NereidUnderIce “Anytime I see something new, that’s exciting for me.” #NASA #Astrobiology #Greece #Expedition @WHOI

Is it weirdly endemic of late stage capitalism that a retail store, Target, has become some oddly prolific as a location at which to conduct political protests?

Native #pollinator bed Beeing enjoyed by the locals. The afternoon sun hits it just right and it looks gorgeous. Excited to see it grow. #permaculture #homestead

It certainly feels we've hit an inflection point climate-wise... The Antarctic not reforming sea ice in its winter seems particularly alarming to me.
🧵Since it is becoming hard to track, here is a thread of the simply astounding weather records planet Earth has started shattering in recent weeks: 1. Dramatic flood events have begun striking various countries around the world simultaneously this week. x.com/Rishusharma26/status/1…

Every time I'm like... "hey, my homesteading and efforts to become more sustainable and resilient are going at a good pace!" The next stage of decline happens like immediately. Society might not make it through the next election tbh. *starts next homestead project*

Hey politicians... the government is broken, fix it. Stop tweeting, grand standing, and stoking divisive drama for quick PR points. Stop thinking people are playing by the rules, they haven't been for a long time. The game is broken and rigged. Remake it by any means necessary.

First they got really offended by pronouns Now they're pretty butt heart about adjectives Not sure society will recover from them discovering verbs.

Potential manufacturing defects & compressive strength aside (both big problems), Carbon Fiber also has a dramatically different stiffness than Titanium or Steel. Everything moves and changes shape underwater when a uniform compressive load (water pressure) is applied. 1/2

Yeah… this was a terrible idea from the get go

Furthermore, because CF is not an isotropic material (a physical property which has the same value when measured in different directions) it is much more complex to analyze its behavior than say metal which behaves uniformly throughout. #OceanGateTitan #OceanGateExpeditions

I will say the CFs STR/Wt ratio is fantastic & weight is a huge factor in submersible design. I think blanketly saying CF is "bad" for underwater use is incorrect, it just needs a tremendous amount of rigor throughout a design/fabrication process. Not favorable for manned subs.

James Cameron makes all great points and commentary on this. No notes.

‘Titanic’ director James Cameron on the ‘catastrophic implosion’ of Titan submersible: “I’m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field."

I grieve for the passengers of #OceansGate I vehemently refute anyone who calls those responsible for the design & ops of the sub as intrepid explorers. They are reckless, ignorant, and deserve no accolades for gleefully disregarding safety of their clients.

Manned access to the deep ocean is ROUTINELY achieved in a safe manner. They willfully deviated from safe practices, w/o a willingness to perform engineering due diligence to validate new ideas & boasted about it. They deserve prosecution. #OceanGateTitan #OceanGateExpeditions

It’s a new social media experience reading everyone’s takes on submersible engineering. I’ve spent my whole career doing it, assuming it was relatively obscure and never once something that’d become the subject of mass commentary.

The amount of negligence and hubris surrounding the sub’s design is readily apparent to the masses which is terrifying in its own right, but really fully understanding the subject matter adds a personal level of rage that this was ever allowed to happen that is indescribable.

I dont know if this article is true, but its pretty terrifying stuff from an engineering perspective. Carbon Fiber hulls are an emerging tech not really adopted by the industry yet (even for unmanned vehicles). 1/x #OceanGate (opinions my own) newrepublic.com/post/173802/…

The thing w/ materials for submersibles is that they are always flexing & deforming under the pressure. It is possible that repeated cycles to pressure or exposure time causes materials to creep & change shape. A design that works fine once wont necessarily be fine forever 3/x

I hope very much that this all has a safe outcome and the addition of an ROV to the search effort is encouraging but the more I learn about the technical details of the sub, the more scary it all sounds. #OceansGate
