Other countries are tightening their citizenship rules, yet Ireland still appears willing to grant citizenship to people who may not be net contributors to the State. The Government is now proposing a self-sufficiency requirement, including restrictions around certain welfare payments in the two years before applying, but why stop there? Two years??? Irish citizenship should mean something. We should be looking at a ten-year requirement, with no serious criminal record and no long-term reliance on benefits for most of that period. Citizenship should be earned, not handed out. It’s not a right, it’s a privilege that inky people of good character should be given.

It is clear that the National Concert Hall’s cancellation of the MDA Ireland event grossly violates its published Customer Action Plan which includes the following: A pledge “ to ensure the rights to equal treatment established by equality legislation and accommodate diversity so as to contribute to equality for the groups covered by the equality legislation on the grounds of gender, marital status, family status, sexual orientation , religious belief, age, disability, race and membership  of the travelling community”. It also asserts that the NCH is “ committed to dealing with ALL OUR CUSTOMERS in a professional manner, according to fair and equal treatment, irrespective of race, gender, sociology- economic status, language, disability and other social attributes” and that “ we will promote staff awareness of equality and diversity” and “ deliver a quality service with courtesy and sensitivity”. Wonder what Mr Peter Kenna, the chairperson of the NCH board has to say. So far totally silent.

Iran’s President says Tehran not seeking conflict with neighbouring states & Muslim countries as Tehran daily fires missiles at them, murders & maims, blocks shipping & destroys their assets & infrastructure. Words have become meaningless. No doubt Iran’s Western supporters will now deny Iran has targeted any of them with missiles & claim that the blockade is a capitalist/Jewish fiction. Of course what Iran doesn’t want is retaliation by any of its neighbours that it has cowardly attacked.
