The next SatAM Project I want to review is an Audio Drama called Sonic Polaris. It's basically a radio show where the story is told only through dialogue rather than animation.
It's a very well made series that adapted some notes from Ben Hurst regarding the true origins of Nicole.
For recap, Nicole was meant to be a pure Mobian and Sally's childhood friend before her consciousness was transferred into a computer, the same one that Sally used in SatAM and the early parts of SatAM.
By the end, Sonic helps Nicole regain her Mobian form. It was meant to be a plot point in Season 3 had it aired. Sally would be happy to have her old friend back. From there, Sally and Nicole would have a mother-daughter bond.
This plot point was absent in the original Archie run before the Reboot added the plot point of Nicole once being Mobian, albeit for different reasons. Regardless, she and Sally still had that mother-daughter type bond. Or at least big sister and little sister in both the Pre and Post Genesis Wave.
Before my review, I will confess one thing. In my main channel, I did air some gripes about some behind the scenes stuff. But I will be leaving that out of the review as I hope to maintain some professionalism. That being said, here's my review.
This Audio Drama is a take on the Season 3 Plot Point, where Nicole does get her body back and becomes something akin to Sally's daughter. Or at least a little buddy, like Sonic's bond with Tails.
The main plot also involves Sonic and Sally trying to stop Snively's latest plan and his alliance with Naugus while also helping Nicole readjust to normal Mobian life.
It's a good audio drama that showcases the importance of family and friendship. How to always be there for each other through hard times. What it means to fight for what you believe in. To protect your home and take back your Freedom.
I also like how Sonally is presented. It's a bit different than SatAM. Sonic's portrayed a bit more like how he is in the games, which changes the dynamic slightly, but it works regardless. You see a more mature Sonic trying to have something serious with Sally.
Not that Sonic doesn't still have that snark. Even Sally has had her sassy moments. That's what made the couple so endearing.
The drama does a good job of combining comedic moments, wholesome interactions and some tragedy into a good package.
Despite this being SatAM based, we still get appearances from characters from other media, including Whisper from IDW as well as Manic and Sonia from Sonic Underground.
The voice acting is good too. Sonic, Tails, Snively, Nicole and Sally have great voices. Especially Sally, who has that recognizable voice done by the talented Cashlin Snow.
There's about eleven parts to this Radio Drama that's ranges from 20 minutes to a half hour. Plus some bonus stuff that's about a few minutes long.
Each part has a thumbnail by various different artists who do their best to bring the highlight of the episode to life.
Now, despite my praise, I do have some criticism regarding certain things.
One, while most of the voice acting is great, the only character I take issue with is Bunnie Rabbot. She did not sound in character at all. Even the VA admitted she sounded too cartoony.
Sorry to say, but it really sounded like they forgot to cast Bunnie five minutes before going live and just grabbed the closest person to do so. She doesn't appear enough for it to be a real bother but it's a shame that Bunnie was fumbled like that.
Second, there was a plot point suggesting that Mina and Sonia were dating. The problem for me isn't the pairing itself, more the reasoning. Mina is put with Sonia just to keep her away from Sonic. That mindset caused problems in mainstream Archie too.
Mina was intended to be with Manic, but apparently the writers wanted Manic to flirt with Bunnie. I won't say Mina with Manic is any better but it really did feel like a poor reason to not put them together.
I think the flirting thing could have worked if it was Manic just trying to get Mina jealous for fun. I still don't think they needed to be together, but if they were, there were workarounds.
It's minor and doesn't change much. It could get removed and the plot wouldn't be affected, but that's a problem just about anywhere when you pair just to avoid certain things. Like just say Mina doesn't have a crush on Sonic period. It's not like she has to be with anyone.
If anything, she could have kept it open so in the future, she could be with Tails as an homage to Light Mobius.
Oh well, shipping in Sonic is always going to be problematic, so if it's not a main pairing like Sonic with Sally or Antoine with Bunnie, then it's just risky and probably not worth it.
I also find it strange that some parent characters were introduced, but changed completely. Like instead of using Archie versions, they just made their own unique versions.
It's probably not a big deal, but it did leave me scratching my head. I'm guessing someone didn't like the canon parents in Archie.
I also wish certain characters appeared like Fiona Fox, Lanolin the Sheep or Tekno the Canary. Maybe some other game characters like Blaze. Come to think of it, I think even Amy wasn't featured, which is a shame.
Those are very minor nitpicks as well though, and I suppose it wouldn't be easy juggling too many characters in the first place.
Still, not a bad experience. I think some in Team Sea3on were involved with this, which could be a good sign of things to come.
I'd give this an 8.5 out of ten.
Pros: Great story. Good voice work. Amazing background music. Talented art.
Cons: Bunnie's poor voice work. Some strange plot decisions and characterization.
Thank you for taking time to read this.
