Julian, Caesar (junior emperor) in charge of the defense of the Rhine limes, is elevated on a shield and proclaimed Augustus by the troops he commanded in Lutetia (modern day Paris) in February 360 AD. Julian's "reluctant" elevation threatened to plunge empire into another civil war, avoided only due to a sudden death of his cousin, emperor Constantius II. πŸ–ΌοΈRadu Oltean for @DespertaFerro

Hyper-realistic facial reconstruction of Julius Caesar based on his Vatican Museum bust. While the reconstruction is stunning, with all facial imperfections clearly visible, we should remember this is an idealized bust from the early Empire. The only portrait of Caesar made during his lifetime is the Tusculum bust, and that one is less...flattering.

More amazing photos, this time of a cavalry unit. Just look at that fully armored clibanarius! Now imagine he is on the other side of the battlefield, accompanied by an entire heavy cavalry rushing at you at the full speed! Legio XI Claudia Pia Fidelis was founded by no one than Julius Caesar. In the early fifth century, the Eleventh was still guarding the Lower Danube at Durostorum. πŸ“·Marcia Mummia Fannia

Well, this is cool Deputy Defense Minister of Greece Thanasis Davakis accompanied by Byzantine reenactors at the β€˜Palaiologeia 2026’ - commemoration Friday in Mystras. The annual ceremonies honor Constantine XI Dragas Palaiologos, the Roman Empire’s last emperor, and those killed during the Fall of Constantinople on May 29, 1453.

By the Power of Greyskull... I still cannot understand how so many people are missing this gem The movie is a love letter to all us kids who spent hours playing with the He Man toys. And who watched the cartoon. Some jokes are perhaps overstaying their welcome. And story is very basic. But that s the point. As MOTU is a cartoon made with 200 millions dollars I laughed so much. And annoyed my wife with explaining all iconic scenes on the screen. If you wanna watch an escapist nostalgic movie, with great music, and lovable characters. Go. Don't miss this one. I Haaave the Pooower!

Now, multiply by 10/20, add heavy armor for horse and the rider, change a setting to Anatolian or Thrakian plains, and imagine you are back in the 10th century As yes, just a look at the charging cataphract would make an enemy infantryman flee in terror

...and thinking of that moment when Spain planned to conquer the Ottoman Empire - via Beijing, because why not. Imagine the Ottomans enjoying their coffee in Baku, suddenly seeing the Spanish armada crewed by Chinese soldiers on the horizon of the Caspian SeaπŸ™ƒ

Thinking of that moment when Spain ruled the world. When all the world oceans were "mare clausum" - a sea closed to everyone, but to the galleons of the Spanish imperial fleet.

Battle of Cynoscephalae in 197 BC marked the beginning of the end for the Macedonians. The Macedon Kingdom survived, but was humiliated, stripped of all Greek possessions and with reduced army. Macedonia would never again be in a position to challenge Rome's expansion.

While the plate armor is undoubtedly anachronistic, I think we can all agree that the Laestrygonians look impressive A tribe of man-eating giants, who ate many of Odysseus' men and then destroyed nearly his entire fleet. Still not fan of Nolan's approach. We'll see...

From the conquest of Egypt in 30 BC to the fall of Carthage in 439 AD, for four centuries, all of the Mediterranean was under control of one single polity - The Roman Empire. Roman warships policed the Mare Nostrum (Our Sea), while the trade ships plied the waters, carrying goods and people. The first and the last time that the vast expanse stretching from coast Gibraltar to Syria, from port of Alexandria to Marseille, would be under control of one master. πŸ–ΌοΈ@JCGolvin

I guess it's possible to make even bureaucracy beautiful. If you're the medieval Roman Empire, that is. Replica of a chrysobull issued by emperor Andronikos II (ca. 1301 AD) A chrysobull was an official, stylized document issued by the Byzantine imperial chancellery. The name means β€œgold seal,” referring to the imperial seal used to authenticate and tamperproof the document. They recognized privileges granted by the emperor to individuals or institutions (monasteries). These documents were designed to look impressive, crafted to project imperial majesty while remaining difficult to forge.

Mystras is a place that definitely merits a visit. High on the slopes below the fortress of Mystras stands the church of Hagia Sophia, one of the finest surviving monuments of the twilight years of the Roman Empire. The church was built in the mid-14th century, possibly under the patronage of Manuel Kantakouzenos, the ruler of Morea, and son of the emperor John VI Kantakouzenos. Yes, that John Kantakouzenos who led the Empire into a tragic civil war, which effectively signed its death warrant...

If you want to know more about this tragic event that practically sealed the Empire's fate, long before the Turks took over the remnants... Without that war, the Ottomans would have more difficult time securing the European beachhead. x.com/CatImperator/status/17…

The medieval Roman Empire, better known as the Byzantine Empire, is well known for its many civil wars, led during its long #history. But few conflicts were as damaging as the Byzantine civil war of 1341–47. The war that broke the Empire. A thread. 🧡
