Hey #EnergyTwitter! This summer we are organizing a 2-day data lab for early career researchers from August 11-12 at Georgia Tech. It will be a mix of tutorials, open lab time, and networking. Applications are due April 3; for more info, see our blog post: bit.ly/catalyst-data-lab
We're intentionally organizing the data lab to coincide with the 2026 @MacroEnergySys workshop at Georgia Tech August 13-14 so participants can attend both:

Hey #EnergyTwitter we're running our 2026 open energy data ecosystem survey. We liberate this public data to serve the community of folks working on US decarbonization. We can't meet your needs if we don't know what they are! It's short (~10 min).

Catalyst's 2026 Energy Data Ecosystem Survey is now online! Don't worry, it's short (~10 minutes).
Help us improve the future of PUDL by sharing the type of work you do, what’s important to you, and how you collaborate:

A new PUDL release is out, v2025.11.0. Lots of final 2024 @EIAgov data, quarterly updates for EIA-930, EPA CEMS and other continuously updated sources. Plus the first EIA-176 natural gas tables, thanks to contributions from @switchbox_datagithub.com/orgs/catalyst-coo…
PUDL v2025.10.0 is out. It updates monthly EIA-860M data & also happens to include final EIA-860 data for 2024, newly integrated EIA-923 financial data (schedule 8B), and (finally!) PHMSA natural gas data. See the release notes for details.

Next Wed. (9/10) we're piloting a hands-on workshop on analyzing messy energy data, aimed at grad students and other researchers who have touched Python, but want to learn more. If that's you, and you're willing to give us some feedback, register here:

We're trying to re-organize the PUDL @KaggleDatasets & example notebooks to make them more responsive, but getting an error when we try to update the list of files in the dataset. Anybody else seeing this? Are we doing something wrong @kaggle?

We've finally finished migrating all our PUDL data validations out of our old DIY pytest pandas setup and into @getdbt running @duckdb on Parquet files. It runs a lot more tests now, and takes 45 seconds instead of ~3 hours. Plus we got to learn SQL.
We're going to organize an internal hackathon to add a bunch of new data validations later this summer. If you're a PUDL user and there are things you think we should be checking, please let us know in this discussion. github.com/orgs/catalyst-coo…
We're still thinking about how to best publicly document what data validations we're currently running, but if you're familiar with dbt you can look at the dbt project in the PUDL repo: github.com/catalyst-cooperat…
Hey #EnergyTwitter we have a new PUDL data release -- it includes refreshed EIA-860M and 2024 early release data for EIA-860/923. We're experimenting with a monthly release cadence:

Hey energy nerds, last week we put out a new PUDL data release v2025.5.0. New imputed hourly demand based on EIA-930 & FERC-714. Preliminary 2024 FERC 1, 2, 6, & 60 data, and YTD updates to EPA CEMS, EIA-860M and other frequently updated datasets:

We're hoping to get 100 responses before we close the survey at the end of the month. We can see there are way more than 100 PUDL users out there from the data downloads, but with totally open data it's hard to get in touch and collect feedback. Please let us know what you need!
Everything is a lot right now. Want to tune it all out for ~10 minutes and help us better understand your energy data needs? We're kicking off our first annual PUDL community survey. Please RT! Both current and prospective PUDL users encouraged.

Hey energy data nerds, if you use public US energy data for any kind of analysis, we'd love to learn more about your data needs, tooling, and frustrations. Short (<10min) survey up here:

We’ve launched a new data portal with fuzzy search, live data preview, and CSV export of up to 5M rows at a time! Check it out at viewer.catalyst.coop.
We built it because these three questions kept coming up in our user conversations:
- do you have data I’m interested in?
- can I double check if that data is actually what I think it is?
- can I export that data to CSV so I can work with it easily?
We hope that the new PUDL viewer helps answer them. It’s currently in beta, and we’re excited to get feedback from you all about how to make the tool even better!
