John & Steve at the Start Line β National Memorial Arboretum
Early this morning, John Walker MBE and Steve Akers β former Royal Navy shipmates on HMS Nottingham and now dedicated A&E Porters at George Eliot Hospital (GEH) β set off on their 34-mile challenge, pushing a wheelchair all the way from the Arboretum to GEH.
They're walking to raise funds for the GEH Charity and to proudly support the Armed Forces Covenant and Network within our hospital.
π This incredible journey marks the start of Armed Forces Week.

In just 24 hours, #TeamGEHCharity will be departing from Manchester Airport to Marrakesh, ready to take on the incredible Mount Toubkal Trek 2025. At an impressive 4,167 metres, Mount Toubkal holds the title of the highest peak in Morocco, North Africa.
This inspiring challenge is raising funds for the Mayorβs Appeal in support of the George Eliot Hospital NEW Breast Care Unit β helping to fund life-changing equipment, enhance patient care, and support staff wellbeing.
Led by Clinical Director Chris Blundred, the team includes:
Rebecca Buckler, Claire Nutting, Gemma Roper, Julie Morris, Deyhim Foroughi, Mathew Sherrington, Annette Tracey, Valter Tracey, Gavin Hawes, Lisa Pettit, Mathew Stockdale, Manish Mittal, Deepak Lodhia, Cheryl Hughes, Vicky Almey, Angela Payne, and Yogesh Jain.
