like lestat chose louis and david to become vampires *bc they were already pretty kinda completely evil* and thus suited for a life of indiscriminate murder. anne wrote iwtv in an era when the reader was expected to see louisβs reticence to kill for the dramatic irony it was
like every single character saβs another character at some point. anne wanted to play with moral relativity and actual *monsters* and like.. murder is too benign in fiction so she needed to demonstrate a level of evil completely alien to the reader

it also didnβt really matter that the characters werenβt built to be βlikeableβ in iwtv bc it was ultimately intended to be a stand alone novel, the tricky bit for a lot of readers is that you have to actually stick with these kinds of people once it became an ongoing series

and she compounds it too with super floral nabokovian prose every time she has them do something horrible. like she *wants* you to get the ick. those parts specifically are her version of horror. like that ick feeling is literally the entirety of the southern gothic canon.

remember that anne was suuuuuuper catholic and fundamentally believed in spiritual redemption. these characters commit actual atrocities of every kind and they have thousands of years to regret it. itβs almost presented as a sort of samsaric cycle but the deaths are hybernations

and like by that logic you can kind of see when each character has these sort of death and rebirth cycles, esp Lestat, Louis, Armand and Marius like a major enlightenment and release occurs on the other side each time.

iβm not an idiot i understand that there really are just 2 kinds of adaptations: super faithful or more experimental. and i really do respect both; but as a reader and a writer i *personally prefer* faithful adaptations that donβt try to βfixβ the *artistβs* work. butthatsjustme
