My LDS niece got baptized today. My brother-in-law asked me to give a talk at the event. This is what I said.
"We learn to obey God by first obeying our parents. You are blessed to have parents who love you and who love Jesus. You can obey your parents and follow their example and trust that they will help you to follow Jesus.
The early Christians referred to the Church as “The Way” (Acts 19:9). Christians were those who had been instructed in the Way of the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 18:25), who taught that He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). Jesus taught that the way to life is narrow, and that only a few find it. How can we know if we are one of the few who found it?
Jesus told us to follow Him. We follow Jesus Christ by keeping His commandments. That is how we show Him that we love Him, just as we show our parents that we love them when we obey them. We give up our own way, we give up the things we want to do, and we say, “I will do your will instead of my will” (John 14:15, Luke 22:42).
By being baptized we show Jesus Christ that we are willing to follow Him our whole life, and even to death. When we are baptized, we are buried in the water, and raised again from the water. Because Jesus gave us hope that though we die, we will be raised again by Him.
When we are baptized we take the name of Jesus upon us. In baptism you become a Christian. Christians obey Jesus Christ. We promise that we will act like He does, that our hands will serve like He does, that our tongues will speak like He does, that our feet will carry us where He would have us be.
I’ll pray for you, my niece, that you will have the courage to obey Jesus always."
