Daily Cat Fact
Domestic cats likely spread into Ancient Greece from Egypt and the Near East around the first millennium B.C. Before cats the Greeks relied on weasels and ferrets to control the rodent population.
Cats did appear occasionally in Greek art including pottery and mosaics. Ancient Greek writers mentioned cats and they were mentioned in mythology but not as central figures like in Egypt. Aesop included cats in several fables.
The Ancient Greeks valued cats as clever hunters and useful household companions.
One Ancient Greek proverb goes “The cat loves fish, but does not wish to wet its feet.”
