New teachers often try covering a new standard each lesson and moving on. This isn’t how the mind acquires information best. Students need spaced repetition and progressive deepening. This requires a “track design” in which old topics are brought back and recombined with the new.

New study on Math anxiety which shows how complex the factors are in terms of establishing the cause of it. Interestingly, one thing that is not mentioned here at all is the idea that tests cause anxiety. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Kids who can’t juggle as many elements in working memory benefit from being able to retrieve elements from long term memory. Instead of denying struggling learners memorization strategies - labeling them “slow processors” - we should actually be leaning into them more.

🚨The headlines tell you education is a dumpster fire, with burned out teachers and hapless admin and rancorous school boards. 👀 Step into a classroom and see magic happen. It's hard some days, but this is the greatest job ever. Our DNA is stamped with "make learning epic."

Yep, number bonds lead directly to standard algorithms, arithmetic with fractions and mixed numbers, measurement problems, solving systems of equations, and more. Part of a good learning progression!
Replying to @gregtangmath
Seems like what you two call number bonds is an algorithm just waiting to be born. Oh, wait…

Happy Sunday! I spent yesterday morning writing a progression of puzzle-y pictarithms for Gr K-7. Concepts build gradually across the grade levels & encourage algebraic thinking & sense-making at every step. Goal is to build strong reasoning & computation skills while having fun!
