I almost missed him. Boarding was normal. Business people in suits. A mother calming a crying baby. Someone arguing softly about overhead luggage space. Then I saw all black. Black hoodie. Black cargos. Black gloves. And a mask. Not a medical one. The kind you see in UK drill videos. The kind that hides everything except the eyes. For a second I genuinely wondered how airport security let this guy through. But what really threw me off wasn’t the mask. It was the octopus. A small plush octopus clipped to his belt with one of those key holder hooks. It swung gently as he walked down the aisle like it had its own personality. He sat two seats away from me. Headset on. Laptop out before the plane even finished boarding. Locked in. No music playing. Just focus. The cabin lights dimmed. The engines hummed. We lifted off. He didn’t flinch. His fingers were moving fast. Not random typing. Intentional. Switching tabs. Replying. Clicking. Pausing. Thinking. Then typing again. I tried to ignore him. Couldn't. Curiosity won. About 40 minutes into the flight, I leaned over and lightly tapped his arm. He didn’t hear me. I tapped again. He paused, slowly turned his head, and pulled one side of the headset off. His eyes were sharp. Calm. Focused. “Yeah?” I nodded toward his screen. “What are you working on?” He looked at me for a second. Then at his laptop. Then back at me. “I’m managing a Web3 community.” That wasn’t the answer I expected. I blinked. “Like… crypto stuff?” He nodded. “Yeah. But not the charts and hype part. The people part.” That got my attention. He turned the screen slightly toward me. Telegram open. Discord tabs. A Notion board. Twitter notifications flying in. “I help founders build communities that don’t just use their product,” he said. “They defend it. Promote it. Build with it.” The octopus swung slightly as he shifted in his seat. “How?” I asked. He leaned back a little. “Most projects think community is just announcements and giveaways,” he said. “It’s not. It’s psychology. Structure. Culture. You set tone early. You reward the right behavior. You design onboarding so people feel seen fast.” He clicked into a chat. “See this? Someone just asked a basic question. If I ignore it, they drift. If I answer it well, they stay. If I turn it into a conversation, they belong.” Messages kept flowing in. He wasn’t panicking. He was orchestrating. 'It’s like running a digital city,' he continued. 'You've got the loud ones. The quiet builders. The skeptics. The loyalists. You don't control them. You guide them.” I glanced at the octopus. ' And the plushie?' He chuckled slightly. Inside joke. Community lore. Only they understand it.” Of course. 'So founders actually pay you for this?' He nodded. 'Yeah.' 'How much?' He hesitated for half a second. 'About 10k a month.' I actually sat back. 'Ten thousand?' He shrugged like it was normal. 'For the right project. Yeah.' I stared at him. 'You're serious?' He just nodded and went back to typing for a moment, replying to something quickly before turning back to me. 'They're not paying for messages,” he said. 'They're paying for retention. For advocacy. For culture. If the community collapses, the project collapses.' There was no ego in his voice. Just clarity. I realized something. He wasn’t just typing. He was moving energy. Starting conversations. Redirecting tension. Dropping memes at the right time. Calming someone frustrated about price movement. Hyping a new feature drop. All from seat 14B on a random flight. The plane hit light turbulence. He didn’t even look up. I tapped him again. 'What’s your name?' He removed the headset fully this time. 'Ceehacks.' I almost laughed. 'Like… hacking?' He shook his head. 'Not that kind. I hack communities.' And somehow, sitting next to him at 30,000 feet, watching him build digital tribes in real time while wearing a black mask and an octopus on his belt…
