Champaign Police were dispatched to the intersection of N. McKinley Avenue and Paula Drive at 9:31 p.m. on June 15, 2026, following a report of a shooting with injuries in the area. Arriving on-scene, officers quickly located two victims with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds. With assistance from the Champaign Fire Department, officers immediately began to administer emergency medical aid. They were transported to an area hospital in critical condition, where one later passed away. While the initial investigation is still underway, information on the circumstances of the incident is still being collected. Champaign Police remained in the area for several hours, and continue to seek potential witnesses, physical evidence, and video that could be of value to the investigation. The man was immediately taken to surgery, where he remains in critical condition. Officers were dispatched at 12:06 a.m. on June 6, 2026, to the 2000 block of Cynthia Drive in Champaign, following reports of a shooting with injuries. On-scene, officers quickly located a 16-year-old male victim with life-threatening injuries from a gunshot wound and began to administer emergency medical care with assistance from the Champaign Fire Department. Champaign Police are seeking assistance from residents in investigating two incidents that occurred in the early overnight hours of May 31, 2026, injuring people in Champaign. These incidents are being investigated separately, as Investigators have no indication at this time that they are related. Incident #1: Champaign Police were dispatched to an area hospital at 1:54 a.m. after a 17-year-old male victim arrived by personal transport with a potentially life-threatening gunshot wound to the abdomen. He reported that he was walking in the 2000 block of Moreland Boulevard when he was struck by gunfire. The victim remains hospitalized in stable condition. Incident #2: At 5:32 a.m., a 36-year-old man walked into the same Emergency Department with a head injury. While he initially reported that the injury resulted from a sports-related incident in the Garden Hills neighborhood, medical personnel quickly determined it was a gunshot wound. A Champaign man is in custody for his alleged role in an early afternoon shooting that injured one. Champaign Police were dispatched to the 1200 block of Providence Circle at 12:33 p.m. on May 23, 2026, following a report of a shooting with injuries. On-scene, officers learned that a 28-year-old male victim had been struck by gunfire, leading to a non-life-threatening injury. The investigation indicates that the victim was in the 1400 block of Summit Ridge Road when he encountered 27-year-old Travon Brize. This interaction resulted in an argument during which Brize is alleged to have produced and fired a weapon, striking him. Brize was located a short time later and arrested in the 1400 block of Summit Ridge Road. Even with an arrest, the investigation remains ongoing. Champaign Police have free steering wheel locks available to Kia and Hyundai owners! These locks are available on a first come, first served basis at our front desk at 82 E. University Avenue in Champaign. Any affected Kia or Hyundai owner is welcome to claim a lock, regardless of where they live. Area residents need to provide proof of ownership of a Kia vehicle manufactured from 2011 to 2021 or a Hyundai vehicle manufactured between 2013 and 2021 to qualify for a free steering wheel lock. The Champaign Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies to step up traffic enforcement and encourage everyone to buckle up for safety. Drivers can expect high-visibility seat belt enforcement throughout Illinois from May 15 to May 26, during the Memorial Day travel period. During the seatbelt enforcement campaign, officers will promote visible enforcement of Illinois law in an effort to encourage the use of vehicle restraints. Those found to be unbuckled or violating other rules of the road will be issued citations and written warnings, when appropriate. Efforts to address seat belt concerns in Champaign will focus on arterial routes. This class is part of the Early College and Career Academy (ECCA) at Parkland College, a dual credit career pathway program for high school juniors and seniors.
