#ThrowbackThursday From aspiration to achievement through dedicated efforts, undaunted commitment. My bond with the people of Sonbhadra has deepened over the years. It began about eight years ago when, as a Rajya Sabha Member from Uttar Pradesh, I adopted Sonbhadra under the Aspirational Districts initiative. From the very beginning, the people welcomed me with extraordinary warmth and affection, making me feel like a member of their own family. Every visit to Sonbhadra has felt less like an official engagement and more like a homecoming. In fact, I will once again be travelling to the district tomorrow. I’m looking forward to reconnecting with its people and witnessing its continued progress. Over the past several years, the visionary leadership of PM @narendramodi Ji and the transformative policies implemented under his guidance have brought meaningful and lasting change to Sonbhadra. Focused investments in healthcare, education, sports, roads, rail connectivity, and community infrastructure, supported through the effective utilisation of MPLAD funds, have strengthened the district’s development journey. It is deeply satisfying to see the remarkable strides Sonbhadra has made across multiple development indicators. Once counted among the most backward districts in the country, Sonbhadra has emerged as a model of progress, consistently featuring among India’s top-performing Aspirational Districts in assessments conducted by NITI Aayog. The Aspirational Districts Programme, launched by PM Sh Modi Ji in January 2018, represents a pioneering approach to governance aimed at reducing disparities in development across districts and states. Its success has been recognised internationally, with UNDP India describing it as a model worthy of replication in other countries. My experience with Sonbhadra has reinforced a simple but powerful lesson: districts with immense potential often require only focused attention, sustained support, and access to additional resources to achieve transformative outcomes. Sonbhadra’s journey stands as a testament to what can be accomplished when effective governance, community participation, and development-focused interventions come together.

Good governance creates stability. Stability creates confidence. Confidence creates growth.

The world doesn’t just see India differently. It reads India differently. This is India’s century! In my latest op-ed in The @SundayGuardian, I write that under the able leadership of PM @narendramodi ji, the past 12years have transformed not merely the tenure of a leader, but the trajectory of a nation. “The change is in posture as much as in standing.” India no longer plays catch-up; it convenes where it once attended, leads where it once followed, and projects confidence rooted in both capability and civilisation. Above all, Pm Modi ji “has proved a crisis manager par excellence.” From navigating the once-in-a-century #pandemic to steering India through geopolitical and geoeconomic upheaval, his defining quality has been resolve under pressure. Under his leadership, India has moved “from conscientious objector and system-taker to system-shaper,” from aspiration to delivery, and from inherited limitations to declared ambition. June 10th 2026, when PM Sh @narendramodi Ji became India’s longest serving elected PM, marked a watershed in the history of Independent India. In 2014, Modi Ji inherited an India that was different from how we know it today, which was even more far removed from the one with Pandit Nehru at the helm and the one in which I served as an officer of IFS from 1974 onwards. The India I represented was a serious country that had chosen to manage scarcity with as much dignity as its machinery allowed. The state had learned to allocate, but it had not learned to deliver. The distance between a scheme announced in Delhi and a benefit received in a village was where the money vanished. The state could plan, but it could not reach. PM Modi Ji’s inheritance in 2014 deserves the same honest accounting which several of his predecessors were accorded. He took charge of an economy the markets had filed among the Fragile Five, weighed down by stalled projects, double-digit inflation fresh in memory, and rampant corruption and scams. Modi Ji’s answer was a different machine altogether. The Planning Commission gave way to the NITI Aayog, which convenes the states rather than instructs them. Direct Benefit Transfer emerged as a decisive instrument to pay citizens directly instead of through intermediaries. It moved the test of governance from intention to receipt. PM Modi Ji reconceptualised the state as a platform. India built public digital rails, an identity system, and a payments network the world now studies. More than 50 crore Jan Dhan accounts opened formal banking to families it had never reached. Nearly 25 crore Indians moved out of multidimensional poverty, and the economy now grows faster than any other major economy. The state that once stood between the citizen and the thing the citizen needed now builds the road and stands aside. That is the substance behind the word Bharat. In 2014, ethanol blending in our petrol stood at 1.53%. This year we have reached 20%, a target once set for 2030 and met half a decade early, and the money that once left the country to buy crude now reaches the farmer, who is now an Urjadata, alongside the Annadata who feeds us. PM Ujjwala Yojana carried cooking gas into more than 10 crore poor households. This is Antyodaya rendered in litres and cylinders. The last person is no longer the one the scheme forgets. She is the one it is built around even as the government now focuses on women-led development instead of just being women-centric. In my latest think-piece "A west-created myth of the uncivil Indian" for @htTweets , I argue that while India must fix its civic flaws, “self-improvement need not become self-abasement.” Having lived half my life abroad and travelled to 75 countries, I’ve seen India praised for its warmth, diversity and Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam spirit—yet a single clip of litter or loud voices is turned into the verdict that “Indians lack civic sense.” “Food is identity,” whether it’s khakhras on Swiss slopes or baguettes in Delhi; mockery turns culture into caricature. “No civilisation has a monopoly on eccentricity or civic virtue.” Europe fights football riots, New York battles subway vandalism, Singapore fines, Japan schools, China blacklists—proof that “civic order is engineered.” India’s answer is perspective plus discipline: Delhi Metro etiquette, Indore’s spotless streets, citizen beach clean-ups and Mahakumbh 2025 sanitation show that “civic virtue needs civic architecture.” “Civic sense is not a birth-mark” but a habit built by families, schools, laws and systems.
