Sad news. Elliot Sianyanga, the elephant victim, passed on earlier this morning. He leaves behind two primary school going daughters, and a young unemployed boy.

Charumbira is a tribalist, but he suggested a good thing "dialogue to form GNU without elections" it's reasonable. Our elections will always be messy & bloody.

It's more than two things. A third is that local people will attempt to make up for lost income by increasing the rate of hunting (selling more hunts at lower rates to locals) and/or exploiting wildlife in other ways (e.g., selling their body parts such as tusks, horns, or bones)

1/2 My main message the European Parliament hunting/biodiversity event: Namibia has a robust governance framework that seeks to protect wildlife and promote rural development. As a result of our conservation success, we host some of the greatest wildlife populations in the world.

This morning, I am participating in an event on the role of hunting in the protection of biodiversity at the European Parliament. I will talk about the success of Namibia's community-led wildlife conservation approach which includes conservation hunting.

While #localcommunities are too poor to hire lobbyists like super rich celebrities do, they have the capacity to encroach these wildlife reserves to oblivion. Unless wildlife has utility value for #localcommunities, it will not be tolerated in their lands. Think smart & long-term

Well said @MrRyanJDalton - I too dislike trophy hunting but am troubled by the misinformation and neo-colonialism in this debate, especially from people who have never been to Africa. I love wildlife, respect the local communities strive to keep an open mind. 👇
Today, the private members bill to ban the imports of hunting trophies into the UK got read, was debated, voted & was successfully put to through to the next stage. As an naturalist, lover of wildlife & empath to nature, you'd think I'd be stoked about this, yet, I'm not...

None of my energy has gone into 'keeping TH', it's gone into wanting conservation to be evidence-based & effective. That is nothing to do with funding, it's a core principle of my entire career.

Great piece by @CharlesJonga in the @DailyMailUK, yet again showing that the costs & benefits of wildlife presence are complex, and sometimes terrible for local people. The UK should support nuanced, locally led #conservation not hypocritical policies. dailymail.co.uk/debate/artic…
