As Batswana we are stuck in a transition rut.
Botswana’s old model - diamonds public sector is breaking. The new UDC gov’t inherited depleted buffers, a collapsed medical supply chain, and FMD is killing beef exports.
UDC led government is doing emergency fixes: military-led drug distribution, P97M for FMD vaccines, austerity to cut spending. But structural reforms, diversification, and fixing CMS are still work in progress.
We are in a painful correction. If diamond prices don’t recover and diversification doesn’t start producing jobs and revenue by 26/27, expect more austerity, service cuts, and political blowback.
The risk is Batswana losing faith in change the same way they did with BDP if they have not done so already.
Where are we heading?
