This is probably one of the largest chitons I’ve seen, but I’m hoping to find a gumboot chiton this summer :)

Check out this mossy chiton I found a while back, acting as a mobile home for a sponge, several bryozoans and multiple mussels!

Check out these closeups I got of a mopalia vespertina yesterday :)

So far there are no reports of chitons injuring human beings. Yet

How many eyes does a chiton have? Your immediate answer might be 0, but think again. The number is often in the hundreds! Countless sod these tiny, simplistic eyes line their bodies, and help them detect shadows so they know when a predator is near!

This is Mopalia muscosa, or the mossy chiton. This species is the most abundant chiton on the pacific coast of North America, and gets its name from the fur-like growths on its girdle. When they die, their soft foot rots first, revealing a bright blue underside to their shells!

Oftentimes it’s hard to see chitons moving, but with this footage I took earlier this year, sped up 2x, their motion is clear. This woody chiton (mopalia lignosa) was found in the lower intertidal under a bridge!

So happy this account is getting some attention already :D
This is Tonicella lineata, or the Lined chiton. This species lives on the pacific coast of North America, and lives among large rocks in the lower intertidal and subtidal depths. It comes in many colors, but often has a pink coloration to blend in with the pink algae it eats!

We have new #invertebrates in our Olympic Coast exhibit! #Polyplacophora is the class of invertebrates commonly known as chitons (pronounced kite-en). The #gumboot chiton is the largest chiton species in the world and they eat seaweed & algae with their ferromagnetic teeth! 🧲

Chitons (Polyplacophora) are so underrated, like, look at this beautiful thing
The physics of how chitons move is fascinatingly elegant. Look at how fast they can move!
