Before doing backchannel references on a candidate… pause. Im not saying NEVER but I have seen it done haphazardly. After the many many hours of searching for your person, don’t blow it at the final hour.
Here are some considerations:
5) Be intentional - What are the open questions and/or yellow flags you have post interview and post conversations with provided references. If your decision is already made up do you need the backchannel?
4) Consider resources on hand- the references a candidate provides willingly often says a lot about them and their ability to do the role. They should be providing a former manager, peer and direct report. If not, why?
1) Trust the source - If you haven't worked with the backchannel directly it may be tough to determine the quality of their perspective. Seek to understand how closely they worked with the person. Unfortunately many backchannels are based off of hearsay or reputation
Just had a friend rejected for a C-level role over zoom… I get the sentiment of sharing hard messages in person, but this is an exception. Rejections should be done over email, let people process, then setup the call/zoom to discuss the why.
Companies want to increase representation yet fall victim to network based recruiting. Unfortunately our networks tend to be homogenous. The team you hire now will set the tone for your organization for years to come. There are no shortcuts for building incredible teams.
A hiring process that takes 3 months doesn’t have to be a bad process.... as long as you check in with candidates after every significant conversation INCLUDING when there are no clear next steps. Let’s make keeping candidates in the loop table stakes. #candidateexperience

In video meetings it's a hassle to unmute just to say one word especially if someone else is speaking. I created a video lens that uses hand gestures to show comic-book style messages instead. So far it's been pretty fun!
Anyone else having problems with Disney ? The app loads maybe 50% of the time and when it does work it rebuffers throughout making it impossible to watch a movie start to finish 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
