Gerrit W. Gong: "As we recognize Jesus Christ at the heart of temple covenants, we refer less to 'going to the temple' and more to 'coming to Jesus Christ in the house of the Lord'".

We were once in the temple doing sealings and we asked the sealer a question. He told us about his own family difficulties he had as a child in a broken family. The sealer then explained how Christ's role in covenantal and used a powerful phrase: “sealing is healing.”

Sometimes, when we are in pain, it is hard to do “Church things” because it reminds us of the prayers we feel are unanswered and the pain that we are feeling. However, it is critical we do the acts of faith that keep us connected to God, because He is our only source of peace

Sister Reyna Aburto: “If we think about it, we all come to the temple to be spiritually healed and to give those on the other side of the veil the opportunity to be healed as well. When it comes to healing, we all need the Savior desperately."

James E. Faust said that a purpose of the temple is to be a “sanctuary in which to receive the sanctifying and cleansing ordinances of the temple,” adding that “as the Saints come into the sacrosanct washing and anointing rooms and are washed, they will be spiritually cleansed.”

Similar to baptism, the covenants and ordinances in the temple help bring cleansing. Most of the sacrifices and ordinances performed at the temple in ancient days were about purification so that “the sin which he hath done shall be forgiven him” (Leviticus 19:22)

Part of the purpose of making covenants – including those made at baptism and in the temple – is to partake of the Savior’s cleansing ability. This is precisely what we are promised when we are baptized, that we will receive a “remission of sins” (D&C 49:13).

Christ's mercy is manifested in the temple! One of the first thing that Christ says to Joseph Smith in the Kirtland temple is, “Behold, your sins are forgiven you; you are clean before me…I will manifest myself to my people in mercy in this house” (D&C 110:5,7).

Creating a covenantal bond with Jesus brings His cleansing power into our life in greater abundance as we seek Him in the temple (see D&C 110:5,7).

A primary teachings of the Pauline epistles is that Christ’s covenant allows Him to apply mercy and clean us of our sins: “for this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins” (Romans 11:27).

In all of our difficult times in life, the answer for us remains the same: We can rely on our covenants and feel the Savior's love more deeply!

There is a strong connection between the strengthening power that Christ offers us and the covenants we make, magnified by the time we spend in the temple experiencing His love.

The term “saving ordinances” is often used. The general meaning of “save” is to protect or rescue, and the term “saving ordinance” does not only mean being saved in the next life, it also means being rescued by the Savior in this life

Elder Quentin L. Cook: "[The temple dedication] was a profound, emotional, and spiritual experience. It brought into clear focus the role temples play in rescuing God’s children through the Savior’s Atonement."

We build this relationship by doing little things everyday: praying, reading our scriptures, turning to Him, and asking Him to be part of our life. After these, we are ready for the next step in coming unto Christ by making covenants.

Can someone have access to the Savior’s love before baptism? Yes, absolutely. But just like our love and relationship increases as we make marital covenants with each other, the power we can feel through the Savior increases as we make a covenantal commitment to Him.

Covenants is one of the purest forms of relational love. The concept of choosing is one reason why our relationship with the Savior is enhanced when we make covenants with Him. It is how we show the Savior that we are committed to Him for eternity.
