I think helpful to think of engagement as distinct from co-production and co-design, and helpful for lived experience insight feeding in. For me, co is about equal power in activity with shared purpose and objectives.
🧵 What do you feel are the essential elements for #coproduction or #codesign?
What makes engagement authentic?
We read over 1000 articles to explore these questions.
Here is a thread on what we learned (with some examples).

Thank you @clentonF@TheKingsFund I’ve been working in mental health system/service co-production for some time and I found this podcast fortifying in challenging times for making the ‘why’ case for co-production and therefore securing the investment behind it.

According to the latest data, suicide rates are at the highest level since 1999. Three quarters of suicides are by men, but the number of suicides amongst women has increased, and is now greater than in 1994.
Nobody should go through suicidal feelings alone. Our patient leaflet sets out where you, or a loved one, can access specialist support 24/7.

How can we improve mental health support for people who have little trust in mainstream services?
🤝By working in collaboration with voluntary & community sector orgs and co-designing services alongside people with mental health problems.

ALT Text: The voluntary sector is uniquely placed to support people with mental health difficulties, and is sometimes more trusted than statutory services. But the funding for these vital services is often short-term, competitive, and uncertain, which limits their ability to plan or collaborate with others. Centre for Mental Health and Rethink Mental Illness logos appear in the bottom left hand corner.
Community sector organisations provide vital mental health support for many people. But they are hampered by insecure contracts & short-term funding.
With @Rethink_ we've explored the groundbreaking potential of mental health alliances: centreformentalhealth.org.uk…

Important long read in BMJ from @lu_hiam @MichaelMarmot on tackling social determinants of health to sustain NHS
“Response is we cannot afford such action - we argue, we cannot afford inaction”
We have the evidence but need cross-party political action

I love theory of change/logic model approaches for complex projects & programmes with multiple stakeholders and success relying on hearts & minds, emotional factors and cultural drivers as well as the obvious doing (that doesn’t necessarily lead to outcomes & impacts)
Messages from frontline asylum charities wondering what to do in face of gov claiming start of asylum arrests tomorrow:
1. People are frightened, be careful not to allow our fear to spread further to them. Be calm. Remember your role is to listen, present options, don’t direct.
DVA is against the law but old culture pervades & therefore police leadership needs to educate & model. Witnessed model response in Westminster back in 2018.
The woman stabbed in Bradford Kulsuma Akter had prior contact with West Yorkshire Police (it’s referred itself to police watchdog as a result)
#Newsnight can reveal thro FOI requests to the West Yorkshire force, 18 women who’ve had previous contact with their officers, have been killed in domestic abuse incidents since 2018

Sad reading, but time to take real impactful action to ensure all get the support they need. It is everybody’s business, so make sure it’s yours and do what you can to help. 🎗️
