I may quibble with some of the details in here but on the whole this is the point, said well. I take a less black and white stance - will we solve the entire data center challenge from load flex and existing headroom? Maybe not. We still need more grid. Bit, flex could get us a material if not significant amount of the way there. open.substack.com/pub/powers…

So excited for @yangenergy to join!
Two announcements: I'm joining 804 Advisory as COO, reuniting with former FERC Commissioner @ClementsFERC. I'm also launching the law firm Juni PLLC — a FERC practice focused on PJM. Different work, complementary clients. junienergy.com | 804advisory.com

this is an important report brief for @NARUC state regulators and state legislators to read as they consider ways to increase grid flexibility, one of the many approaches needed to address affordability and the need for grid modernization and build out. No solution will solve for the challenge, but grid flex is a critical component and this brief walks you through the ratemaking, planning, interconnection and BYOC aspects of achieving effective policy in your state.

While there’s no shortage of important longer-term policy reform needs to address rising electricity costs, there are several policies states can implement now to drive cost savings more quickly. Here are 4 ideas that Lori Bird and I outlined in a new @UtilityDive piece:

Make sure large new loads pay their own costs. Smart policies for data centers and other large loads can deter speculative interconnection requests and ensure new demand supports costs for existing customers.

Really informative but digestable take on what continuing war in the Middle East does to global crude and gas markets. Thx @JasonBordoff and your impressive colleagues!
"No one knows how this ends" — not the US, not Iran, not Israel. We brought together four of our energy and geopolitics experts to break down what the conflict in Iran actually means for oil, gas, and global markets. ▶️ Watch the full webinar: youtu.be/RYnYnagQxXg

Thx @EnergyLawJeff. I've been thinking about this in the generation context. Utilities across the Mid-Atlantic, at least, are chomping at the bit for their states to revert to vertical integration or some version of owning the power plants themselves. We shouldn't forget that all of the chaos around data centers hasn't changed utility incentives. States should proceed with extreme caution when entertaining re-regulation proposals under the guise of affordability amidst increasing demand.
In a time of surging demand and rising costs, removing competing sources of investment capital would be a tragic mistake. Yet states, and now the White House and FERC, are facing increasing pressure from monopolies to do just that. 1/ subscriber.politicopro.com/a…

Congratulations to @FERC Commissioners and Staff on a strong order that moves the ball forward on large load interconnection and fair cost allocation. It’s ambitious but critical.

Fun to be back in podcast land. Hard to keep up with all these moving large load and flex pierces, glad to have the chance to think through the DOE (now #FERC ANOPR) with @tylerhnorris and @shaylekann.

The power of status quo in the electricity business is uniquely formidable. Marissa Gillett provided leadership on behalf of customers, through the morass. Too often, still, women brave enough to take on the challenge are falsely attacked and implicated. What a loss for CT!
