Wonderful times back then in Aldeburgh and amazing artists.
#ThrowbackThursday to 65 years ago today, when Benjamin Britten’s opera A Midsummer Night’s Dream received its world premiere at Jubilee Hall. Written in just a few months for the 1960 Aldeburgh Festival, it transformed Shakespeare’s tale into one of Britten’s most beloved works.

Some said the series was performed too slowly under Klemperer. The Principal Flautist, Gareth Morris, adored by Klemperer, told me it was pure magic.
Today, we celebrate our very first Principal Conductor, Otto Klemperer - born on this day in 1885! 🎉🎶
Enjoy this extract from our 1970 concert performance at the Royal Festival Hall, when Klemperer returned to conduct a cycle of Beethoven symphonies, including the monumental Ninth.
