Agreed it was an unbelievable fight, great pace great upper body movement from both fighters and as I say the jewel in the crown was that amazing infighting and the constant back and forth for 15 rounds. It was and remains one of the All Time Great Fights ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Incredible performance from Duran. Both fighters in their prime giving everything they had. A superfight that delivered the goods.

In fairness I think SRL would always have caused Hagler problems because of his speed and versatility.

Prime Hagler wuda eaten SRL-and he probably knew that

I agree with you on both counts. I thought SRL just pipped Hagler. Like you I agree the Marvelous One would have beaten any Middleweight in any era.
Replying to @ClonesCyclone
Leonard won. Hagler adopted the wrong tactics and you donโ€™t score by going forward and missing with a lot of punches. Hagler still arguably one of the greatest middleweights of all time though.

Best Era of middle weights in history and will never be matched. The four kings are the reason I fell in love with boxing as a young man ๐ŸฅŠ๐ŸฅŠ๐ŸฅŠ

I miss a lot of the characters who were around boxing. There'll never be another Harry Carpenter. I always enjoyed the interviews with Larry Merchant too. And referee Mills Lane was a legend. But I live in the past.

There was a lot of pride at stake, Leonard said that he could beat Duran at his own game and when Duran hurt SRL in the early rounds Ray just doubled down on his tactics and said OK then, โ€œletโ€™s have itโ€ In my opinion there has never been a better fight at close quarters, Never.
Replying to @ClonesCyclone
Do you ever feel that once it became a war and Leonard was hurt early that it set the narrative for the rest of the fight? Feel the commentary were a bit under Durans spell as an unstoppable force and this went against Leonard a little. Duran was great also.๐Ÿ‘

As Iโ€™ve just mentioned I was in training camp with the Irish Olympic Boxing Team for Moscow and I was the only one that picked Duran to win. I believed that if Duran could entice Leonard to fight his fight at close quarters that he could prevail and he did #WhatAFight

Did you think Duran would beat Leonard before the fight?

Agreed SRL said prior to the fight โ€œI can beat Duran at his own gameโ€ meaning infighting. He kept his word and they put on a masterclass at fighting at close quarters, it was breathtaking. I was in training camp for the Moscow Olympics with the Irish Team. All the boys picked SRL

We all know SRL fought the wrong fight first time up, but you have to admire him for actually fighting the wrong fight, when he could have stood off and used his speed and movement. He went into the trey with a man who lived his career there.

Thatโ€™s a fair comment but listen to his voice in all those other World Title fights, LloydHoneyghan, AlanMinter, ColinJones, FrankBruno, CharlieMagri, JohnHStracey etc, Harry Carpenter was off the scale good ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿ‘Š
You may have a bit of a soft spot for him Barry considering he was ringside at the Pedroza fight. ๐Ÿ˜

Thatโ€™s a fair comment John many people would agree with you but for me, Harry had a remarkable tone to his voice which for me sets him apart. I agree with you re knowledge Reg had phenomenal boxing knowledge but the argument is that he didnโ€™t have to cover as many sports as HC.

Have to disagree Barry. I think they were as good as each other but in different ways. No doubt that Reg had more boxing knowledge than Harry. Harry was possibly a more animated commentator.

The first Duran v Leonard fight was absolutely breathtaking, it had everything speed power endurance & unbelievable skill. If any young pro wants to learn how to fight on the inside, this is a masterclass in infighting, a truly spectacular exhibition of that skill, & it was 15x3.
Thought he was outstanding in the Duran fight, gave Duran the fight he wanted but admire the reasons he went about it that way and was still going for it in the last round. He had the lot.๐Ÿ‘
