So I wrote an entire video essay about it.
This is my first time doing this kind of thing, so the process is going a bit slow, but I'm hoping it'll be out by the end of the week.

I think a major part of this "media literacy" thing everyone talks about but doesn't go into detail with is the ability to separate that which exists as an Allegory and that which exists to tell a Fun Story. One must also acknowledge that not every story needs to be both.

If you are looking into an allegorical story expecting Deep Lore or Worldbuilding or Character Development that is outside of the scope of what that story is trying to say, you will likely leave disappointed. Just as if you try to find profound themes in fluffy yuri fanfiction.

With that being said, art exists to be interpreted by the viewer, and which one you decide to view a story as is ultimately up to you; it is precisely as deep as you wish it to be.
But again, don't be disappointed if you cannot find what you are looking for.

as a native canadian it really irks me to see people going into tim hortons and looking at the menu. it's a quick way to out yourself as a transplant. real canadians just know what items tims has and you can't look at the menu anyway because it changes every 20 seconds

As a native New Yorker it really irks me to see people going into the deli and looking at the menu. It's a quick way to out yourself as a transplant. Real New Yorkers just know what ingerdients delis have and order something without looking at the menu.

I really love the hc that Dave finds comfort and safety in Karkat's loudness because he grew up paranoid. I like to think that Rose might have something similar with liking Kanaya's articulated speech since she often had to deal with a drunk mother
