hey digital artists and collectors
it's time to talk about archival and preservation.
if you've run into me in person lately, this has probably been a topic we've discussed. if i see you in nyc next week, this will be on my mind. so let's start putting our thoughts in order.
one may assume that blockchain is a 'forever medium' and our nfts will exist automagically for generations to come, but most of us know better by now. we've sadly watched
@club_nft shutdown their archival services, and opensea has reduced the resolution of preview images to a nearly useless thumbnail. few people have made independent provisions for the long-term preservation of their creations and collections to live on chain.
so what do we do??
and how can we expect museums and institutions to adopt these new media forms when we haven't even established our own guidelines and best practices?
i don't have the answers. yet.
but i'm going to do some research, and keep asking questions, and i hope to get some help from people who know more than i about what has been established and what needs to be done.
if you'd like to talk more about this in person next week in NYC, dm me about meeting up. if you want to talk about it here, please comment.
as this conversation progresses, i'm going to throw some useful links in this thread to bookmark for future reference.
if you know of any research papers, institutional submission forms, archival guidelines, etc that are available online, please share them here as well.
thanks for letting me share my stream of consciousness here <3
